This has to be a daft question

Type of diabetes

How do you know if you have type2 diabetes my doctor said I have that was in September sent me on a DESMOND coarse in December haven't herd from them since I feel fine so what are the signs I was 15 1/2 stone and now down to 13 1/2 sorry I have not introduced my self yet I will soon

I've appended a link to NHS Choices where the symptoms are described.
I'm guessing that you will have had a HbA1C blood glucose test,this measures average BG over the previous 2 to 3 months. Do you know what the result was?

I all takes time you´ll learn and try to relax and remember that others also take a few month to learn the most essential and to control... but first priority is to buy a meter if not you are given one..
I think you your self should contact your doctor
 
Hello stickfloatdave the early signs of diabetes are raging thirst and going to the loo alot among other things if I we're you I would make an appointment with doctor again you may have got lost in the system and if you have got diabetes It will give them a chance to sort it out also good luck with weight loss keep it up. All the best

Well I guess you may well be hearing from them soon enough, you're nearing the 6 month mark since diagnosis and they will probably ask you to go for another HbA1C to see if there has been any deterioration and your blood glucose or it's lower than it was when you were first diagnosed. Although my GP asked me to get the first one done three months after and then every six, but after three months they put me on metformin and said go back in another three and then every six month with a visit to the diabetic nurse.

Your surgery must do things differently but I think you should have seen the nurse after three month to check your feet and stuff, also have you heard from the people who scan your eyes? Your GP should have mentioned the screening and your referral when you were diagnosed as they should be checking for Retinopathy.

I had a stupid cough for months and my blood pressure was slightly up so they took bloods and that's all I know I will ring my doctor and ask him

Your gp sounds a good one. OP may be unfortunate and have a GP like mine. My surgery said I would have my first follow up March following my diagnosis 20 Sept off a blood test taken aprox 8 August. That may correspond with the op's experience.

The Desmond course did say I was entitled to a blood test three monthly. Since I am end of the road Glaucomic and got 3 hospital appointments for the eye dept in Feb I booked an appointment with the dn in January. The receptionist organised the blood test pre dn appointment and lo my first gp retinopathy appointment arrived. Interestingly the hospital had done a retinopathy last July. The hospital obviously saw the results of earlier blood tests on my records. My gp did not tell me I was prediabetic. Apparently she gets a payment for referring diabetic patients for clinical trials. I am sure that must be unconnected to her decision not to advise me I was pre diabetic.

The Desmond course was informative but based on the eatwell plate. This forum is pretty much my only information source. My dn is very cute but so far nil points for advising newcastle diet has first step, ignoring nice guidelnes on prescribing diabetic meds and giving me statins instead and then claiming statins do not cause constipation.

When I went on the Desmond course they gave me a bit of paper with my hbA1c, total cholestrol, hdl, ldl and blood pressure on it. They also said I was entitled to a further hba1c test after 3 months. I was diagnosed 20 September and my diabetic nurse told me my follow up would be 6 monthly. I have other issues which enabled me to get an earlier follow up appointment. If you are happy to put your readings on a public arena it will enable people to give you better advice on a general guideline sort of basis. The most important lesson I have learnt is that you have to be your own expert. It is your body, your life and everyone is different. Everyone I have met on this site has been wonderful and supportive. I am sure you will find that too.

You know the thing that pis**s me off? It's coming on here and reading about all the inconsistency in treatment. We have a national health service and there are the NICE guidlines, why on earth is it that people get looked after better than others and some get the sh*t end of the stick? Yes I know we are all individuals but sometimes I read a post and just think FF* Arrgggg!!!
