Thought for the day

I was reading through this thread - it’s amazing the hard work you’ve all been doing to get the LCHF message out to everyone.
It is definitely slowly filtering through. I’ve been reading through a manuscript written by a LCHF GP who apparently met someone from this forum who had put their diabetes into remission. It has turned him into a card carrying convert, out to spread the word too.
I was interested (and irritated because I’m not in the uk) to hear about community ‘health walks,’ which appear to be happening all over the uk. My brother and his wife were persuaded to take over a walk (or two) in their area some years ago when the 90+ lady who led them up to that point had some health issues. I had thought that it was just local to them, but have since discovered that this is happening in communities throughout the uk. Perhaps somehow that info could be linked.
Great to hear your family are contributing @NicoleC1971 is also involved in similar initiatives.

Hopefully my comment was not interpreted as suggesting nothing is being done. I think your last sentence sums it up, even among people I know, nobody willing to change dietary habit when there's a pill to be taken.
Hi @DavidGrahamJones as a long standing active member I know you are aware of a lot of the things mentioned, I just felt summing some (and I know I’ve not got it all there) of the things going on might help newer members.

I feel I should be doing something more as well, as a doctor myself. As a Consultant, I do have some influence in my own workplace and I have started here - talking to colleagues who are all quite amazed at my results so far on a LCHF diet although its early days for me still, only diagnosed end April 19, not had my first repeat HbA1c yet but lost 22lb /10kg so far.
I am going to try my own GP practice when I see the DN for the first time this week.
Our dieticians in the trust I work for are a nightmare though, its all low fat, good carbs and Eatwell plates

There is an organisation called the Public Health Collaboration from which the leaflets can be obtained. They have an Ambassador’s program with training and support for just the purposes we’re discussing (there are a few Ambassadors on this forum).
Do you have more info on this to hand? I’ve just been accepted to attend the next ppg at my surgery but am not confident yet in taking further steps as it’s way outside my experience. This could bridge that gap.

HSSS, if you Google, "Public Health Colarboration" you'll find them.

They are a registered charity, in the UK, and several members her are also members there. This site owner was also one of the founding members, and contributes a lot to it.

Still have a long way to go on the official level. I went to my local Diabetes UK support group at my local hospital this year, to see if there were any changes, alas sad to say, nope. They were all happy to follow the same old, same old, even though they were suffering complications. Even someone was questioning me on low carb he had so many doubts still insisted about good carbs, This person suffering from retinopathy.
Other's had med increase. They continue happily follow the instructions of the diabetic consultant who looks after the department.
Oops
Shocking, and they aren't encouraged to test! One lady at my local diabetes UK meeting is so upset about having to go on insulin. More upset she now has to test. She has NEVER tested before. The DNs just say 'no need, it can become obsessive'.

I feel we should at least be given a choice. Low carb an option. Educate the benefits to testing. Education is the key. The right kind.

@Debandez

With your backing and a. Generic leaflet, I reckon we stand a good chance of making an impact.

If we all show up on one day and if accepted happy days, but if refused...
Let's ask to speak to the diabetes team as to WHY.

Pretty sure most of us would be star patients in diabetes at each our respective practices.
If we presented with sensible, practical, advice on leaflets, wouldn't that make at least one or two re- question their own beliefs

In one's n twos I doubt they would notice...but if we picked one day of action and hit them with as many members as were willing to help get involved, WE could shake up their world on a major scale .

I can't believe they don't talk to each other and if not having their own newspaper they'll at least have a web page to collate news.

So word would spread, and maybe one or two would re evaluate their current position
We have nothing to lose but our chains of fear.

We have a right to be treated AND SUPPORTED by the most up-to-date methods prevalent to our disease.
THAT is most surely the MINIMUM of our HUMAN RIGHTS as patients

Worthy of consideration, if we want to be effective
Oh yes. That's been my goal since dx and so many others. I was ready to March to downing street , but with everything else going on!!!!

Look what we achieved in about 4 weeks planning for our Birmingham event 1st September last year. The PR from that short day is still spreading far and wide. So many on this forum are active in this area. It's coming from ground level up. But its definitely coming. I
Big article (a whole week) on diabetes coming up soon in The Sun. Will be read by millions!!!! Thankfully dcuk behind it and not .org!!!

Leaflet a work in progress but coming on nicely.

You have people and organisations representing Big Food and Big Pharma at Govt level whise aim is to keep their masters and shareholders in profit.
That is the rides nations are swimming against.
So i congratulate you as a forum, site that has championed LCHF and LCHF diets with able support and research ability and drive from DDM and Dr Unwin.
In Australia we have the albatross of the alleged collusion of the Dietitians Association of Australia with the food industry to actively discourage dietitians in all levels from training through to postgraduate education from prescribing such diets.
And for TIDs as an example the obesity rate world wide is greater than for the general population.
We can guess why but it suggests current management is failing and diet is one factor that has to be looked at, as it us with other forms of diabetes.
Please make no mistake about the perfidy of Big Food in these problems which can plagues all diabetics.
You have shown that persistence, group pressure and entusiasm can make in-roads into the forces pitted against us.

Spoke to my interviewer for the up and coming Diabetes articles and she thinks it will be August. The Sun has a massive following. This is a biggy!!!! DCUK is behind it and how LCHF really works for so many. Excited.

I went on diabetes.org.uk over the past few days to see how the site the NHS points people to is rolling these days. Sadly nothing has changed!

I've been thinking, I try hard not to, but that requires more thought.

On this forum we have something in common above and beyond the obvious and I think that is the wish to pass on our experiences, and we have many and varied experiences.

Something that comes up now and again, and it's some recent posts that got me thinking, is the approach to diet and more specifically, low carbohydrate diets. There is no question that many have benefited from lowering our carb intake and it is frustrating to see the official guidelines repeatedly saying that there's not enough proof and further evidence is required. This means that there are many diabetics who will not have heard about the benefits a lot of us have gained by lowering carbs.

I wonder how we could encourage more people to look at this forum, if only to allow people to see that there are other ways of controlling BG that don't require more medication.

Any thoughts?

I posted on another thread that many are not aware of the forum. I spoke to two diabetic interest groups last week. Neither had heard of Diabetes.co.uk but had Diabetes UK leaflets on their stalls.

They were :

1) DESMOND
2) Diabetes Interest Group [NHS]

I'm literally telling everyone I bump into about it, doing as many interviews in the media too (as many of us are). Working with my 2 GP surgeries who have been amazing, they helped me put this together. To be handed out to anyone that wants to give LC a go (when I get time I'm going to contact other GP surgeries and take the show on the road!!!) @lislad has been amazing in this front. I'm also going to hold a few clinics at the surgery for pt that wants to talk about diabetes or weight loss. Leaflet is a work in progress and can be amended. Giving a presentation to 100 in Sept networking. CCG organising. All positive stuff and I do feel things like this move oor plight forward.

Mrs W is now looking to hold some drop in sessions in a cafe in the town, in the evening, to capture those who work during the day. There is more to come on this...

Deb’s leaflet is now on our PPG minutes as an actionable item. Our next meeting is next month.
