Thoughts are 'all about food'

I was diagnosed type 2, two weeks ago and am going to see a diatition on Wednesday. It seems that since my diagnosis I have constant thoughts about when am I going to eat next. Ive gone on a healthy diet and lost about 10 lbs but sometimes feel like i want 'eat the fridge' of things that i shouldnt have.
I wonder how long these cravings will last! I ate one chocolate biscuit and feel guilty about that. My b/s was 7.1on diagnosis and I'm hoping to find out soon find out what I can and cant eat and what amounts etc.
Will a chocolate biscuit cause me problems/or is a small treat now and again 'good for the soul?' It is a minefield of information out there and very confusing for me at the moment.

Hi Mike again :) Just one chocolate biscuit won't do much harm as long as it is only one. I have a small daily treat (also a biscuit) which I look forward to and remind myself of when I am tempted to eat anything else I shouldn't. Keeps my willpower going all day  I count the carbs of that in my daily ration of carbs I set myself. My levels are good and my weight is going down quite rapidly.

Have another read of the basic information I posted to you - it's very good advice and works for me so will for you too. Test after eating something new (2 hours afterwards) and you will see what it does to your levels so you'll know whether you can eat that again or not. Try doing a test after a biscuit  You have to find out what certain foods do to you personally - we are all different. You'll soon get the hang of it :)

Mike,

Mention this to your dietitian on Wednesday and get them to analyze your diet.

My BS was 25 when I was diagnosed three months ago - not 7 - and that gave me such a shock that I haven't had anything sweet or high carb since that day. i was put on Metformin straight away and, whether it was the medication or the significance of my diagnosis, I lost the urge for biscuits and chocolate I have had for my entire life.

Giving up (or cutting back on) familiar foods is hard but, rather like stopping smoking, becomes easier with time.

Good luck.

Hi Mike

You may be suffering from carbohydrate withdrawal symptoms (no, I'm not joking!). If you can stay strong they WILL pass. Make sure you are getting plenty of protein and a reasonable amount of fat, both of which will stop you being hungry.

If possible, don't have anything in the house that you shouldn't eat. Snack on cheese, cold meat, hard-boiled eggs, a few nuts, vegetable sticks etc. Eat whenever you want to (allowing for your testing routine) rather than sit and fantasize about chocolate biscuits. I keep crispbreads and oatcakes in, about 5g carb each, but those have to be restricted too - I have no more than 4 a day.

Don't despair - you're among friends!

Hi Mike,
I have to admit, im the same! i was diagnosed three weeks ago, and am waiting to go on the DESMOND course, because, like you, it feels like information overload right now!!! I seem to think about what, when and how much im going to eat from dawn till bed time!
So far, ive lost 9 pounds, and am testing 3 times a day, my fasting bg is between 6.5 and 7.5, and it definately seems to take a long time for my after meal Bg's to come down, they are usually around 8 to 9 at two hours. My diet has changed a lot, and im also taking 500mg metformin daily, i do think this med has affected my appetite, as i dont eat a lot, but im still really confused as to whats best for me, all food seems to make my Bg rise, but its getting to the point where i feel like i cant eat anything!
So, i am joining you as confused diabetics!

You have to work out what is best for you as we all have differing food likes and dislikes.....you should be able to choose from a large variety of foods, many things may not be taboo providing you keep testing to see the effect they have on you.

This is the information that Daisy passed on to you earlier in your introductory thread, you should read it and choose foods to fit in with the advice you were given.

When I decided to make an effort to gain control of my diet it was so very daunting, and still is because I am having to change eating habits that have been there all my life... (40 odd years ) I have never been fond of chocolate, but I LOVE crisps, fruit, fruit juice, bread, potato, cake, biscuits, rice, pasta. There is SO much controvercy, conflicting things about what to eat and what not to eat, sugarfree, no added sugar, carbs of which x amount is sugar etc, the aspartame debate, so how healthy is the sugarfree option really? and the fact that low fat stuff is loaded with sugar, or the low sugar stuff is loaded with fat. Heck, I even heard today that having low alcohol lager is not good because it is loaded with sugar.

Anyway, I have taken the basic information from people here who have had good results with low carb and general advice about what to avoid and I have cut down gradually. The result has been HBA1C 3.12.2010 = 17.3 and heard today that HBA1C on 16.3.2011 (when I had last bloods done )is down to 11.4. Still high, but considering that I really only started making an effort recently I am well chuffed. I have kept a food diary and the things I have drastically reduced are fruit, fruit juice, much less rice, potato, bread, pasta and other complex carbs. I have not cut those things out completely, but just having considerably less of those has made a big difference. I have also been doing a lot more excercise.... just lil things like rather than taking the bus closest to where I am, I have walked a few stops further. I have enquired about the GP referal to my local gym which means I get sessions for £1.50. This includes a consultation to work out a programme to decide what suits my needs.

Based on MY experience, I would say, dont stress too much. Just working on little changes initially can make a big difference and when you have even just a small change in your BG results it is sooo encouraging and motivating. Get as much information / help from your diabetic support team that you can.

Hi mike
