Thrush

I'm a 22 year old male Type-One Diabetic who has recently been feeling discomfort around the genitals. My blood sugar isn't terribly well controlled, although I've been trying to get things in order as a result of this.

My symptoms include redness at the tip of the penis, a slight pain during urination and just occasional discomfort. I visited the doctor regarding similar symptoms about a year ago and he suggested that Diabetics are prone to Thrush and suggested Canesten cream.

I should mention that my symptoms seem to come and go (some days I'll feel perfectly normal, and then for a week or two it'll flare up, sometimes weeks apart) - which seems to suggest it's affected by my blood sugar levels. After a month or so, I still wasn't seeing the results I had hoped and returned to the doctor for another evaluation. At a loss, he suggested I visit a GUM clinic for a series of STD tests - all of which came back negative (leading the GUM doctor to suggest it must be blood sugar related).

I've since moved and have now visited a new doctor. He agreed with the previous diagnosis but didn't feel it necessary to prescribe anything. For peace of mind, he suggested I return to the GUM clinic and talk to an expert there. The expert, once again, agreed with the diagnosis.

This is all well and good, but I'm finding it difficult to come to terms with the fact that this is just something diabetics 'have to deal with'. As a result, I've come here to speak with other diabetics who have (hopefully, though regrettably) had similar experiences. Having done a lot of reading online, there is one rather embarrassing symptom that I can't pinpoint to Thrush: I'm noticing a bit of urine dribbling, which is causing my underwear to get damp at times and seems to have caused something similar to 'nappy rash' on my left and right thigh - although this has only occurred recently. Has anyone else experienced this?

hi,
this sounds like thrush, i had it really bad at the beginning and it was extremely painful and just like you are explaining, if you get your bloods under control the thrush should go, high bloods can cause thrush to come and linger, if u need help lowering your bloods, let us all help :D

Hi TypeType - Yes I suffered badly from thrush when my blood glucose levels were running high. Also, a quite severe itching of the scrotum on occasions.

All of that sort of thing has gone now that I've lowered my blood glucose levels. Also, many other things have disappeared too that neither I or my GP had even asssociated with diabetes - including needing to keep getting up in the night to go to the toilet. I had associated that with at best getting old and at worse prostate problems.

My advice would always be to strive to get better control of blood glucose levels.

Best wishes - John

Hi

I'm a male who had thrush at the start of my Type 2 five years ago. One GP just prescribed a steroid ointment without thinking it might be a symptom of Diabetes! I gather it is one of the most common presenting symptoms but he missed it. Once I got my BS down below the magic area of 10-11 mmol where the kidneys dump sugar in the urine, the thrush went and hasn't appeared now in 4 years. I would hope yours will also disappear when your BS is under good control. My dribbling also almost vanished as well. I have also been taking low-sugar cranberry juice for breakfast which in theory anyway makes your urine more acidic and less prone to candida

Hi Typetype, a very warm welcome to the forum!
There was another posting on this subject recently, and as others have said it's asscociated with high blood sugars. I had agonising thrush for about a year before I was diagnsed, my doc just said use natural yoghurt and never checked my urine! It was so uncomfortable, but I remember it did come and go.
Get your sugars stable and controlled, and treat it with canesten. If it's particularly stubborn there's an oral medication Diflucan which can do the trick.
Hope it eases up soon.

as ohters have said it's common in"uncontrolled" diabetes Get those numbers down and it won't come back. Keep urine clear of glucose. If it has damaged the foreskin, It may require circumcision.

I must agree with the previous posts, thrush around the scrotum was a problem for me until my BG came down and was stabilised.

I also had thrush in my mouth, small white pieces of yoghurt/chewing gum type substances in the left and right hand side at the back of my throat, this also disappeared after BG reduced.

Thanks for all of the kind words! I've been taking regular salt baths and applying Canesten cream one a day. My plan is to get my sugars a little lower and then take a tablet solution to hopefully rid myself of it!

I was most worried about the urine dribbling, as I couldn't see any thrush descriptions mentioning it. I thought perhaps it was some unrelated discharge, but was confused as it looked identical to urine. I'm glad others seem to have experienced a similar issue.

I had male thrush back when I was diagnosed... took the regular treatment and it didn't disappear (this was before I realised I had diabetes). After I came out of hospital and started injecting and alike, I carried on applying the cream and it went away within a week or.

Apparently the bacteria that causes thrush thrives on sugar, so when you have high blood sugars (over 10ish as mentioned above) the sugar leaks into your kidney and into the urine. Hence providing the perfect environment for the bacteria - warm and sugary!

Hi.

i wouldnt have replied as alot of people have been spot on about thrush but i noticednobody comented on the sore skin on you thighs...

when i have had high sugars for long periods of time in the past i also get this sore spot irritated more by tight trousers! i put this down to diabetes as over the past two months my sugar has been so much lower and this problem has dissapeared :)

if your sugar is high enough to cause this and thrush im guessing your sugar must be high alot, maybe you should discuss all of this with your diabetes specialist?

i think with canesten cream etc your maybe trying totreat it backwards, start with trying to get your sugars down slowly and best you can and im sure everything will follow, it certainly worked for me!

good luck :)
