Hello everyone. I'm just wondering how many of you have a thyroid problem?

I've been unwell for a while, and just recently my blood test has shown my thyroid function is borderline, but I have to wait another 3 months to have another blood test to see if it is the same or not. My doctor also said that people with diabetes are prone to thyroid disease.

Yes, I have an underactive thyroid for which I take medication. It was only found out at the same time I was diagnosed with Type 2 when they did a full screen blood test (at least I think thats what it was called). Its hard to say if the symptoms I had at the time were my out of control Type 2 or the underactive thyroid as meds for both were prescribed at the same time.

Hi
Over active or under active thyroid? I have an under active thyroid, which I am Levothyroxine for. My symptoms are weight gain and difficulty losing weight, dry skin and thin eye brows which I pencil in!! Good luck with the next blood test.

I had a partial thyroidectomy in 1976 to deal with an over-active thyroid. Over time, the remaining part of the thyroid becomes unable to produce sufficient of the thyroid hormones for your body. Mine became under-active about 8 years later (?). I now take levothyroxine to bring me up to a normal level.

The classic symptoms for an under-active throid are gaining weight without eating more, feeling tired and abnormally cold. Consultants used to ask whether you preferred summer or winter when they were at the diagnosis stage ! An over-active thyroid makes you lose weight and feel too hot all of the time.

Once they've decided you need treatment, they usually sort things out pretty quickly. The repeated tests they need to send you for every few months, when they are trying to make up their minds is a real nuisance though. Good luck with your doctors. In comparison with diabetes, it is quite a minor problem.

I've been on Thyroxine for donkey's years. It was what I thought would be a normal thyroid blood test which turned up the diabetes. I'd not seen a doctor since the blood test results appointment when I was told to do the low cholesterol diet. Once settled on a dosage suitable for you there are only annual tests done.

Hi @No1DeadlyPoison . I've had an under active thyroid for maybe the last 15 yrs or more. The problem started about 10yrs after being diagnosed T1. A yearly blood test highlighted the problem and I was put on 50 mg of levothyroxine. At the time i noticed that I felt better and more energetic. Over the years my dose has risen to 150 mg daily and my yearly bloods show my levels being where they need to be. Have I had any side affects? No not really, if I need to lose a few pounds in weight especially this time of year I find it problay takes longer than it should do. Is this because of the levothyroxine? Maybe.
Hope you get everything sorted and I wouldn't worry about having to wait 3 months for your next test.
If you do start to feel bad, lacking energy and generally tired all the time then obviously go back to your GP.
Good luck.

Thank you all for your comments.

I think it is over-active, I'm constantly freezing, tired, my heart beats really fast, even if my just standing still and difficultly losing weight (Which is a pain). This has been going on for a very long time and it's only now the doctors have found something wrong with my thyroid. My mum has a thyroid problem too and she noticed it before the doctors did.

They say about waiting 3 months but I just feel like rubbish. :(

most of those are / were my symptoms ( not the heart beating really fast)
It has also made me more emotional.

I have an underactive thyroid.

I am on levothyroxine 50mcg but I don't feel they are listening to me that my symptoms are still present but blood tests are borderline.

I would keep chasing your GP

Hi,
I was diagnosed type 2 in October, I was told then that my test results I was borderline hypothyroid, my TSH was 6.9 . Like you I've had to wait a couple of months to be retested. The latest result was 5.9, although its lower I'm told its still borderline. I'm due to see my GP about it on Tuesday, not sure what if anything he will decide to do, I suspect because its lower he will do very little, but were see. I think the normal level is 4 or below, but I may of read that wrong. Does anyone know for certain?

Hi! Thyroid UK have a very good online forum (rather like this one) with a wealth of experience and useful information. I have Hashimoto's (underactive thyroid) which is an autoimmune condition, as is T1 diabetes, and there can be an increased risk from one AI condition to another.

I had an overactive thyroid, treated with carbimazole, fine for about 18 months, then reoccurred, so treated with carbimazole again. Thyroid checked regularly by endocrinologist and has been fine ever since.
