HI,

Just getting used to being diagnosed type 1. My sugar levels are good when i test four times a day. However, in between testing i noticed the reading can get up to 12. I usually take my insulin just before i eat. Should i be taking it an hour before i eat?

New to all this!!

Cheers
Ash

an hour is too early but 20/25 min work for me. it really depends on what you eat. If I eat simple carbs that spike me I can safely inject even 30 min before but If I eat low GI (lentils and beans etc) I will inject just before eating or after if my reading was lowish. You need to experiment a bit what suits you but 15/20 min is a safe option to start with and it will help you to reduce spikes

Hi Ash
welcome to the forum :)

as it is such early days for you -- your blood glucose meter is your best friend.

this is the following testing regime i would recommend

getting up in the morning ( fasting) and before eating breakfast
2 hours after first bite of breakfast
before lunch
2 hours post lunch
before evening meal
2 hours post evening meal
before bed

doing this will enable you see what your bloods are doing through the day.

your diabetic nurse can advise on adjusting your insulins if you keep these blood records written in a diary.
hopefully you will get on a carb counting course in a few months to help in adjusting your insulin ( ask your nurse about this also )

and remember to take it 1 day at a time and try not to worry.

all the best !!
