Im a type 1 diabetic diagnosed February 2015 and have recently been feeling like slight pins and needles in my hands which get worse if i stretch or lift my arms up. Theres no burning or itching or anything else, just pins and needles and is worrying me. Anyone know why it is happening or get simmilar feelings?

Would you be kind enough to share you last HbA1c reading with us? or perhaps make a comment on general trending of your sugars? (like - do you have generally low readings (4-7mmol/L or are your readings usually higher then 10mmol/l ? )

When do you notice this feeling? If you stand up straight for say 5 minutes with your arms hanging by your side - do you feel it ? Or is it only in certain positions? Like laying down with your hands on your chest for long periods?

I get incredible tingling - more like a burning sensation in my hands and arms in the mornings sometimes, always a sign of low sugars and cured by glucose tablets. The worse the pain the lower the bm. Even dsn thought this was strange and had not heard of this symptom previously.

I had something similar a few weeks back...took some general advice from a friend who thought it was down to RSI or carpel tunnel. I treated myself to an elbow support strap for a few weeks and altered my working position...touch wood it seems to have done the trick. Hope it's something as simple as that for you too

Hopefully it is something very simple, im going to see what my DSN says in a few weeks and hopefully she says the same

Im not sure what my HbA1c reading is but my reading is usually in the 7 area. Ranging from 6.3 to readings of 12 at the highest but to my own fault as i inject late. My average from the past 30 days is 7.9. Theres a very very slight feelingb all the time but its usually very noticeable when i reach for things or lift my arms up. If i stood for 5 mins with my arms at my side id feel it if i rubbed my fingers together very slightly. It varies though, sometimes is very slightly, others white noticeable. Mostly is only very noticeable when i stretch etc.

Hrmm.
Well, as a diabetic our first thoughts are usually complications or nerve damage. But if your newly diagnosed and your sugars are averaging around 7-8mmol/L then i doubt this is a side effect of diabetes.

Perhaps check your blood pressure. It may be low blood pressure causing some poor circulation in your fingers, kind of like when you stand up to fast and the blood drains from your head and you get a bit fuzzy lol I assume the same could happen to your hands if you reached for something, or stretched, the blood would drain a bit and cause a tingle lol

Beyond my poor assessment I would say speak to your doctor if you are concerned.

I had something like that when I had a trapped nerve in my shoulder/neck. What made me think of it was you saying it felt worse when you lifted up your hands. Mine did too. I had that trapped nerve for weeks. Even when the initial pain went, I still had the tingling for a while. I could feel it particularly in the ends of my fingers when my hand were hanging down by my side.

I got my trapped nerve by working at the computer at the wrong height. It's worth a thought to see if you think back to any trigger. I've also had it when I've slept on my tummy with my arms up higher than my shoulders.

I do have a history of reoccurring low blood pressure so it might be, thanks for your reply! Was worrying if it was neuropathy but thanks for the reassurance

I get a tingly leg - only when 'after' sitting on it tucked underneath me .
Feels a tad numb with a sort of pins and needles sensation in it .

Fades away after I start hobbling or walking about ... :)

Thanks for your reply, being a student i am always at a computer so theres a possibility! The tingling is mostly in the end of my fingers too. I hope its gone away for you now

Yes, thank you :) It's gone away, but I'm always aware of how I sit and work now as I dont want it to come back.

I hope you sort your tingly hands. If I hadn't had had the earlier shoulder and neck problem, I'd have been worried when I got them. I can't remember the exact details but a nerve runs down from the shoulder and there's a narrow point where it can get trapped. I couldn't believe they could tingle so much because of that. I found sitting right helped me. I also used ibuprofen gel but check that's ok for you if youre thinking of using it.

Aw thats unfortunate :( seems like a nuisance and thank you, i speak to my DSN soon so im sure theyll clear it up. ahh right i see, seems technical :o

I also suffer from "pins and needles" quite severely especially last thing at night and first thing in mornings... Any advice on how to ease this? Levels are average around 6/7. Diagnosed type 1 less than 6weeks ago, and very active

Hi, I get that sometimes too, Ive been a type 1 diabetic for 6 years... I wouldn't let it worry you... however if you continue getting worried, then best to speak to your doctor. :-)
