I agree getting a meter is a very good idea. With testing, you will be able to monitor your glucose levels and identify which foods cause your glucose to increase more than others, and therefore avoid them etc. All good news
You mentioned you are taking Metformin but don't mention how long you've been on it. It's known that Metformin can lessen your absorption of certain vitamins in your stomach (complicated process). Other meds, such as PPIs or acid-reducing meds, plus many others, can also interfere with the absorption process.
I strongly suggest you ask your GP to check your Vit B12, Folate, Ferratin levels and your thyroid function as you may certainly have low/deficient levels. Also, it's worth having Vit D checked too.
If you check out Vit B12 deficiency symptoms, you may find you have more than you realise.
