Hey all,

Sorry im having a bad week. I was diagnosed with daibetes nearly 7 weeks ago. I went ot eh doc thinking i had a kidney infection but ended up in the a&e an hour later with a blood reading of 23.3. Im on novaprapid and levemir. My levels are still high between 12 and 17 sometimes and rarely hits 9. Im on 18 units of Novarapid a day if im not planning exercise and 12 units if i am exercising. Im also on 10 untis of levemir a day. My team are very good and very helpful, thee trying to slowly bring down my levels.

I didnt realise i would have to watch myself and evn have a snack if i want to little things like housework. Ive such a craving for choclate and sweet stuff aswell, its driving me mad.

Everything is sucj hard work when you have diabetes. Sorry im just having a big aul moan!!

Ditto, I was diognosed 4 weeks ago and have not had a sweetie or cake since, I had real craving for chocolate today, so I know what your going through. But hey, we won't let this beat us, there is still a great life to be had out there, we will get it all sorted eventually. You take care, your not alone. Best wishes Viv

Hey guys,

I will prob get lynched for saying this, but my endo told me this at the start, if your craving something its because your body needs somethng and this is how its assured it will get it, e.g chocolate maybe means ur body needs a wee bost, after all scientists proved that chocolate is good for women (in the correct doses :D ) ..... he also told me that have what you want as depriving yourself of something just makes the desire for it worse ..... so have a bit of chocolate, but just make sure its only just enough to take away the urge ...

... for me a small square of dairy milk (sooked for ageeeeeeeees and thoroughly enjoyed lol) :D is enough to take away the pangs, and then I can go for weeks without the urge again. But psychologically you have satisfied the urge so it goes .... don't satisfy it and it will magnify and last longer ...

Hopefully that made sense lol

You can always go for the darker chocolates such as Green & Blacks 85% which has only 15gm carbs per 100g. There are, of course, other brands that do 85% as well. Find one that suits your taste. I initially found 85% harsh but now like it and it's very healthy!

Trouble is
this thing doesn't go away, so at some stage you just have to accept that and get on with making the best of it. that sounds harsh to people who are still in shock, but i's all there is.

Thanks for reading my moan!!

I am allowed a dessert after my dinner if i eat a lot of carboyhdrates but obviously not all the time. I knoe i will have to get over the cravings but its actually harder than i thought. I was grand the first month but havent been great lately, stopping myself!

Its so hard especially with easter this weekend although my parents have got me a diabetic chocolate easter egg!!

Be careful with that diabetic egg. You will probably spend a lot of time on the loo if you eat too much of it. :(
Have a couple of squares of dark chocolate, much better for you. Lindt do a lovely one flavoured with ginger. :D :D

Thanks for the heads up!!!

Actually a friend said to me at the weekend about dark chocolate. Would i be able to have that?

Hi ciara,
There are loads of posters who eat dark chocolate. The higher the percentage of cocoa solids the better. Some are as high as 95%. Just limit yourself to a couple of squares as a treat. :D All the sweets and chocolate advertised especially for diabetics have laxative properties so watch out.

Catherine.

Great thanks for that info!

I must get dark choclate for the fridge, especailly for the time of the month!!

I wont be eating much of the easter egg so!!!

That's great advice to follow Ciara, last poster took me back to when I was first diagnosed at 19. A couple of months later on my 20th birthday, I thought I'd treat myself to a birthday chocolate cake, and bought a special "diabeteic" choc cake mix. The cake was lovely, but my sisters and I spent a lot of time on the loo that weekend!!
There will be times when your BG is low when you can have a square of your fave chocolate. It's early days for you, and you won't feel so deprived just healthier with any luck :D

Hi ya, I've posted this on another thread but saw your post and thought you need to know this too!! Moser Roth 85% dark choc in Aldi is 5g carbs per bar and you get 5 bars in a pack. they also do truffles which are 3.0g carbs for the dark and 3.8g carbs for the milk choc per truffle and are delicious and are pretty low carb qtys for choc!! there is sooo much for you to learn about carbs and insulin etc, etc and I'm sure this time next year you will be teaching us all a thing or 2  :P

PS - as everyone has said, avoid Diabetic Choc like the plague!! Bless your parents, my parents did the same when I was diagnosed, you can still eat it but in small doses please! 8)

WOOT!!!

Trip to Aldi is on the cards...

I'd vote for eating the chocolate, count the carbs and have the insulin. My son's daycare workers didn't realise I gave him his afternoon tea before I left and they gave him another lot. When I picked him up I just gave him the insulin for the extra and all is fine. The biggest advantage of being type 1 is that no food is completely off limits. It just works out a bit better for most people if the quantity is kept in check. That's really kind of the case for everybody.

All the best for Easter and good to hear your making some progress getting your levels down. It takes time and don't give up. Slow and steady wins the race.
