Type 1
Hi, I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been for 11 years now. Recently I have been struggling with my blood sugars and have no motivation to get back into exercise, I constantly feel tired. Does anyone else get like this?

Hi, I got like this a few years ago.

When I spoke to my doctor originally, she said that it is part of being diabetic unfortunately and I would need to learn to deal with it (this is honestly the response I got!). I then left feeling like I was complaining over nothing and just being a wimp so carried on with life.

I went back and seen another doctor after 6 months as I felt awful and was sleeping 12-14hours per day. He took some blood tests and it turned out I had Pernicious Anaemia and an iron deficiency. I had literally lost 6 months due to the first doctor not running a couple of basic blood tests.

I would recommend going to your doctor so they can run some tests, even if it is just to give you peace of mind. Remember autoimmune diseases are more common if you already have one, so it could be any number of things that is causing you to feel this way.

Hey!
I've been diabetic for 17 years now and I've recently experienced this quite badly, at the most inconvenient times - when I'm driving on the motorway. It happens when your blood sugars are high - the blood thickens slightly so it's harder for oxygen to get where it needs to go, chiefly the brain. Makes you feel very sleepy no matter how much coffee you've had. For me it's part of the Diabetic Burnout / Fatigue.
It's worth having some blood tests done to make sure you have no vitamin deficiencies or anaemia as these can cause quite severe exhaustion. Talk to your doctor/GP and request a blood test to check vitamins and iron. Then if it's a deficiency they can prescribe you something :)
Hope you're feeling better soon!

When you say you've been struggling with your blood sugars, have they been high or low (or both)?

High BS can cause tiredness, as can lows. Have you been tested for things like coeliac disease and thyroid problems?

Hi, I have mainly high blood sugars and some lows and yes I have been tested and I haven't got any of that so I'm not sure.

Ok - well, maybe it's the highs? When I'm high, I hate it as I feel like **** - tired, irritable and like I can't concentrate on anything.

I know it's a vicious circle - you feel tired from highs so don't have the energy to sort out the highs - but maybe you could gradually work on them and slowly improve your control, so that then hopefully you'll gain momentum, feel better, and get back into range more.
