Hi guys, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but the more I read the more I'm convinced water is the best sort of drink for Diabetics... Can anyone tell me if they can suggest any other drinks as water can get boring.. I've read that Diet drinks can cause cancer so is there anything else? Please HELP,

I go for diet coke and diet squashes. Tesco do a decent range of diet fizzy drinks too. I add sparkling water to the squash and usually make it weak, so it's more refreshing.

I rarely drink anything hot, so it's squash and coke for me in all weathers. Occasionally I'll have a glass of semi-skinned cold milk.

As for the cancer theory - sorry but everything we eat or drink seems to cause some reaction or another, so I have stopped worrying about that one. I need to drink and as you say water can get a bit boring.

Diet Indian Tonic Water with Lemon/Lime is a nice refreshing drink. I kid myself it's full fat lemonade  When I'm bored with that I go for Diet Coke.

This forum is amazing, you guys are brilliant, thank u so much...lots for me to try and maybe will switch to Coke Zero instead..

I enjoy hot fresh lemon juice diluted with water with a slice of real stem ginger added. Quite cosy and comforting in cold weather.

Fruit smoothies made with semi-skimmed milk are nice for cold drink, or leave milk out if you prefer a fruitier taste. A matter of minutes to make if you have a blender. Frozen berries work quite well, fresh strawberries are delicious. Maybe we should start a drinks recipe thread. :D

There are a lot of carbs in that! A half-pint glass of semi-skimmed alone is about 13 to 14 grams carbs, and the fruit is extra carbs on top. You could almost halve the carbs in the milk by using lactofree milk.

Robinsons No Added Sugar, Decaff Tea/Coffee and Green Tea are my favourites.

I have quite a lot of Robinsons no added sugar juice, tea and coffee with the smallest amount of milk imaginable, peppermint tea and then a few glasses of pepsi max at the weekends. I think it's a case of just trying all sorts until you find something you like, I tend to give friends the rest of packets that I don't like.

Good point, Grazer, about the semi-skimmed milk and thanks for tip on lactofree. Strawberries and blueberries are, I think, relatively low carb fruits, although for sure things like apples, pears, etc are much higher.

I use almond or soya milk for low carb alternatives to milk - when mixed with something else - I still have semi skimmed in my tea, because I prefer the taste

My two pennyworth:

Cold drinks
Very cold coffee by the pint with a dash of 2% fat milk
Alc-free beers particularly the German varieties but not the taste-suspect Kaliber

And for the other side:
Hot drinks
Black coffee
espresso (my weakness)
Tea by the pint (+ dash of semi-skimmed milk)
Green tea (jasmine is yummy) (no milk, low fat or otherwise)
Fruit tea (endless varieties on the market)
Camomile tea (an acquired taste)
Oxo cube in a pint of boiling water
Marmite - 3 teaspoons in a pint of boiling water (That is assuming that you like marmite. If you don't reduce amount by 3 teaspoons) This is nice with what in South Wales we call pobs - chunks of bread - floating in it. Pepper can be added but it doesm't need salt.
Miso soup (follow the destructions on the packet)

Teetotal since 1989, T1 since 1996, HbA1c 63 (if I remember correctly)

Cheers

I've started to add red wine to my diet Indian Tonic Water and Bitter Cranberry. I don't normally drink alcohol but since I've been low carbing I'm tasting my food much more and enjoying it. I heard red wine can lower morning BS and I found a very low alcohol fruity red on the shelf at ASDA, it's called 'B', it's 5.5% alcohol, 3.4g carbs per 100ml which is enough for me, and I like the taste of it and it gives me a nice warm glow. I'll probably also use it in soups and stews too. At £3.50 or thereabouts a bottle, it's really not bad.

I generally go with decaf tea/coffee, red tea. I find a smoothie with my lunch doesn't affect my sugar readings too much. Sometimes that carbonated or still flavoured water - in a choice between a bit of sweetener and sugar the sweetener option isn't too bad.

Vodka and soda.

Lots of tea with full cream Jersey ( proper milk ! ), no sugar, shot of vodka. A great start to the day !

Works for me...

Superchip

agree with superchip even use double cream in coffee shot of whisky or rum in it ;)

for soft drinks invest in a sodastream to fizz your water... £9 for a refill of the CO2 bottle then add no added sugar cordial

cheaper than buying bottles of fizzy water and less waste :)
