We found out our son has diabetes type 1 three weeks ago. heart breaking few days in hospital he was very poorly (DKA) im still coming to terms with it all. It feels so massive, it feels like we will never get to grips with it, there is so much to learn! We do not know anyone with diabetes so decided to speak to people and parents with diabetes or with a child with diabetes to help us! so help me please when i ask probably really stupid questions! :(

hiya hun dont worry about stupid questions no one thinks they are stupid as we have all prob asked the same ones so ask away lol

my son was diagnosed aged 4 and is now nearly nine but i still remember those first days after diagnosis, dylan too was very poorly with ketoacidosis rushed to hospital in an ambulance and stayed in hospital a week part of which was spent in high dependancy unit.

if we can help in any way just ask thats what we are here for we all need help and support no matter how long we have been living with diabetes in our lives so welcome and ask away :D

Sorry to hear about your son. I bet your world has been turned upside down and you must still be in shock.

I know that you will find lots of support and advice on this forum. There are plenty of parents with lots of knowledge who can help and offer guidance.

You are on a very steep learning curve, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Things will get easier over time and life will get back to normal.

Yep, we know what's it like. Getting a diagnosis of diabetes is so different from being sick, going to hospital, getting out and life goes on .... Diabetes stuff consumes a whole shelf in my fridge and a whole piece of cupboard space, parts of my car and, of course, my handbag. It is really stressful at the start but it all gets a whole lot easier down the track. The only things I have never got used to is not being able to finish anything I start and missing sleep.

And then there is your child that you put on a brave face for and support through all that is happening to them. It can be so frustrating when you think you are doing everything right and the meter reads 22 - or worse.... 2!

Anyway, Khaleb's had diabetes for 3.5 yrs now. I don't know if I've got better at managing it or it has got easier as he's grown. Maybe a combination of both. While he is well we cruise along fairly well and have found our routine that seems to work

Ask away with all your questions. I asked heaps.

Hi, I'm sorry about your son's diagnosis. You are not alone in how you feel right now, there is an awfully steep learning curve to go through and a lot to get used to and come to terms with. As the others have said it does get easier with time, even although it may not feel like that right now. Ask away, we've all asked lots of questions and no question is silly. The support and information I have had from this forum has really helped a lot over the years.

Hey, I was diagnosed with diabetes at only 20months of age so i dont remember that stage but i know how overwhelmed i would feel if any of my 3 were to get it now, we actually test them every now and again to make sure they dont have it. Im sure you will get loads of support on here and hope things become easier and more routine as well as a part of life for you soon
