Total hysterectomy on Monday - so anxious

Not at all the same, but I had reconstructive surgery a long time ago after a motorbike accident - femur and kneecap, had to learn to walk again. One of the few things I remember clearly from the entire episode was my first bowel movement...

Funny how memory works. Glad things are going in the right direction...

I was going to remind you privately that it was only a week since the operation - on Monday, obviously - but you seem to have made so much progress already that my moral boosting ploy is totally unnecessary and was probably something my daughter would roll her eyes at - and sigh - and I might even have got an 'Oh, Mum.' or even 'I know you mean well' - you seem to be heading through recovery at blistering speed so long may it continue.

I might need that pep talk later, I'm sort of waiting for for the other shoe to drop. Also, I'm not the most patient of people...so I'm likely to need someone to say "don't worry" a lot as this goes, and also "keep doing what you were told"

Lots of people said they had low appetite after surgery but I've been pretty much normal appetite since the start, mostly I think, it was how bad the food was at the hospital that made me eat less.

Remember recovery from anything can be two steps forward, one back, several to the side - it is rarely linear. So don't feel despondent if this happens with you. Some times bodies/systems have to regroup, hold their progress or wait for another part of them to catch up before they can start to recommence healing again.

Im so sorry you needed a full hysterectomy but I wanted to let you know, it TOTALLY changed my life. I was never happier than when I had it done (I was 29). You are doing so well. Listen to your body. Some days you'll feel fantastic - then others ... not so good. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

And how's today been @the-mental-one ?
Most of the stress and anaesthetic may have worn off by now so you might feel tired/down/sore
Sore, a little bit of bleeding on the incision line after I had a shower.

I become really bloated, which is when I have the worst pain, when I eat anything (also happens to a lesser extent on drinking)... I've asked dad to switch to smaller meals six times a day instead of normal sized meals three times a day, hoping that will help.

Expect a bit of soreness, but watch for redness, heat, unpleasant discharge from incision. Get medical advice if any of those.
Have you been given advice on changing dressings?

It's been hot to the touch since day one, I think that's just me when I'm healing as most cuts or scrapes I've ever had have been the same.

I've been told to put sterile gauze in my underwear where it covers the incision but otherwise not to put any dressing on it.

I have sterile water to use with more of the sterile gauze to clean the area carefully and gently, not to rub, and to make sure it is dry afterwards.

I've asked dad to check it a couple of times because it's hard for me to see it that well, even in a mirror.

I might go back to sink washes for a while until the incision is a bit more healed, I do tend to have scabs that slough off in showers / baths... it's like the water softens them to the point they can just fall off.

You could always try a large, waterproof dressing - just for the duration of the shower, being careful as you remove it, not to pull too hard. There are loads on Amazon, but might be something to chat with your pharmacist about

My incision is healing nicely, my bloods have been a bit messy, I'm hungry more than I expected to be and have had actual cravings for things...like bananas, cheese, peperami / salami / other meats, it's weird but I guess my body needs things for healing.

Had been wondering how you were.
Early days , as yet, but looking good so far.

Florence Nightingale revolutionised care for the wounded by bringing hygienic conditions and a vastly improved diet, avoiding infection and providing the raw materials for healing.
Protein and fats are the building blocks of cell walls, protective barriers such as scabs and new skin rely on them.
