Tough Question...

Hello Everyone,
I have a bit of a tough question...I consistently have high fasting numbers and follow a low carb diet. When I stick with the diet, my post prandials are fine. If I go off the diet, my ppd's have been consistently getting higher (156-205) BUT if I continue to eat poorly for 2 days, they come back down to "normal"(120) ppd again. This pattern has proven several different times. I hope I've explained it correctly. I just don't have any idea what's going on?!?! Most of my numbers are technically prediabetes, but not sure if I'm LADA or type 2 yet. Thanks!

@SmilesandSundays if you're in the US, here's the UK equivalents for your results: 156 - 205 mg/dl is 8.7 - 11.4 mmol/l. 120 mg/dl is 6.7 mmol/l. Here's a converter... http://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-sugar-converter.html

In response, I can tell you that I have a lower fasting glucose the day after I up my carb intake, but my fasting glucose will worsen if I continue to do so over a period of days. What do you consider a high fasting glucose level?

Thanks for responding! My fasting glucose is usually right around 6.7 (120) for U.K. I don't currently take any meds. Mostly just the low carb diet. Dr prescribed acarbose to take with high carb meals, but it hasn't made a difference so I don't usually take it. I have an appt to meet with him next week and I'm not sure if he will prescribe other meds.

The high post prandial levels when you eat carbs are probably just due to temporary physiological insulin resistance. That can happen on a low carb diet to non-diabetics. That's why anyone that is going to do an oral glucose tolerance test is told to eat carbs for a few days before the test.

@SmilesandSundays I so wish I knew what I know now when I crossed over into pre-diabetes in 2002. You are positioned well to reverse your diabetes.

If you're in the US, I encourage you to read The Blood Code by Richard Maurer, ND. The book covers the basics, will give you a good start using the low carb diet, but also will explain all the lab tests and more importantly what they mean. Here's a link to the book... https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Code-U...qid=1490758467&sr=1-1&keywords=the+blood+code It's a terrible book title, I know. The book really is about pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Before you buy the book, you can also learn more about his approach to treating diabetes by hearing from his former clients... http://www.thebloodcode.com/view-stories/

I actually keep extra's of this book on hand to share with newly diagnosed diabetics. After you read that one, if you want to dig deeper into the research, Jenny Ruhl's book Blood Sugar 101, 2nd Edition (2016) is quite good too. :)

Have you had a GAD test or a C Peptide test yet? That might be a good idea if you can get tested.

@SmilesandSundays if you'd like feedback, you're welcome to post what you're eating for a day or two with your fasting, and pre- and post-meal glucose readings. One of the things that I like about Dr. Maurer's book is that he helps you figure out the severity of your insulin resistance based on a your lab work. For me, managing diabetes is all about metrics. The more data you have, the better you'll understand where you are with your diabetes. :)
