Toujeo Insulin - BEWARE!!!!!

Well i'll be damned #2 ... my Hba1c is actually 5.9% not bad at all. The FSL estimated a 7.3%.

Hi guys
I have been on Toujeo for several months now at start it was highs and lows very little sleep.
Now i some good sleep patterns after finding correst dosage.
Sugars do go up and down through out the day but over all it has vastly improved for me with Toujeo.

I had poor control with sugars 20-30 and above

Levemir, Lantus, and Humulin I, had little effect

In July I was put onto Toujeo and have seen a dramatic reduction in sugars and also my HbA1c

I guess we're all different and find that what works for one does not work for another and vice versa

So far with Toujeo it's been good and single figures in sugars for me are now the norm

You are right there everyone is different. My HbA1c was 94 before Toujeo after the first 3mnths i have got it down to 49 nurse very impressed so we will see what my next reading will be in January.

Apparently Toujeo has the tendency to clog up the needle more than any other insulin, they suggest ejecting 3 units with force before injecting. I'm on Toujeo for the rest of the month, by the end if there's no change i'll ask for a change to lantus again.

It remains odd, during the day i'm stable and barely need Novorapid but during the night it's a whole different story. If the night would remain below 200 mg/dl i'm happy enough, below 150 mg/dl and my HBA1C would be awesome.

They also did a blood panel, no ketones, cholesterol is good oddly though low vitamin D (just barely), no infection, .... I'm otherwise healthy. It did had me worried for a while that there would be something else wrong. Last time they did a blood panel all my vitamins and minerals were in the upper ranges, must be the lack of sun.

I experienced my needle clogging several times during the 2 week period I was on Toujeo-I was ejecting 2 units before each injection as I had been instructed to. The needle clogged to the point that I could not inject the full dose on three occasions and had to replace the needle before I could depress the button on the end any further. I did report this to my doctor. I was using BD nano 4mm needles.

Maybe you were used to Lantau and this was the result of the regime change

I've been on it for 3 months (80 units a day) after using Levemir then Lantus and for the first couple of weeks my readings improved i.e. many below 10. Then the last couple of months has been a nightmare with highs of 20 plus for no particular reason, resulting in shots of 30 units of Novorapid to try and reduce levels. I've developed this immense hunger all the time. Talked to my DB specialise nurse as my HB was 77 and she advises I'm on too much insulin and wants me to reduce to 40 units.......... and not take more than 20 Novorapid at a time - plus she is going to call for a case study about my circumstances. The consultant has confirmed I am "Insulin resistant".

I'm on this insulin with humalin I have 160 tj and 50 of humalin
My sugars were great at first but after 3 months they are now back in the high 30's Totally fed up with it and cannot go back onto u500 the local nhs will not fund it. I'm sentanced to death with no recourse

I've been using toujeo for roughly 5 1/2 months since switching off the pump. Here's just a 2 week example of my fasting numbers on 25 units of toujeo in the evening.

06/01/2017
: Fasting is 11.5 mmol/L
05/01/2017: Fasting is 13.0 mmol/L
04/01/2017: Fasting is 10.9 mmol/L
03/01/2017: Fasting is 10.3 mmol/L
02/01/2017: Fasting is 13.0 mmol/L
01/01/2017: Fasting is 13.2 mmol/L
31/12/2016: Fasting is 16.9 mmol/L
30/12/2016: Fasting is 7.5 mmol/L
29/12/2016: Fasting is 8.0 mmol/L
28/12/2016: Fasting is 11.1 mmol/L
27/12/2016: Fasting is 10.5 mmol/L
26/12/2016: Fasting is 8.7 mmol/L
25/12/2016: Fasting is 8.9 mmol/L
24/12/2016: Fasting is 9.2 mmol/L

Personally I'm still unsure if it's toujeo itself thats causing me such erratic blood sugars or it's human error. My main issues or things I've noticed while on toujeo are that upon waking my blood sugars begin to rise (no eating or taking fast acting insulin) and also that the amount of insulin I need with breakfast changes daily even though my meal stays the same. Two examples from different things i've tried;

Week 1, day 1: Wake up with 9.0 mmol/L have 1 cup egg white, 1 cup diced onion/pepper/mushroom/kale, slice swiss cheese. Take 0 fast acting insulin; 1 hour later- 10.5 mmol/L; 2 hour later- 12.5 mmol/L; 3 hour later- 12.4 mmol/L; 4 hour later- 12.2 mmol/L.

Week 1, day 2: Wake up with 8.5 mmol/L have 1 cup egg white, 1 cup diced onion/pepper/mushroom/kale, slice swiss cheese. Take 3 units of fast acting insulin; 1 hour later- 12.5 mmol/L; 2 hour later- 12.5 mmol/L; 3 hour later- 11.5 mmol/L; 4 hour later- 11.3 mmol/L.

Week 1, day 3: Wake up with 12.5 mmol/L have 1 cup egg white, 1 cup diced onion/pepper/mushroom/kale, slice swiss cheese. Take 5 units of fast acting insulin; 1 hour later- 8.0 mmol/L; 2.25 hours later- 3.6 mmol; Correction 20G carbs; 2.5 hours later- 8.0 mmol/L; 4 hours later- 10.9 mmol/L

This repeats itself throughout the week those are just examples of the fluctuations; onto week 2.

Week 2, day 1: Wake up with 9.0 mmol/L have 1 cup egg white, 1 cup Oatmeal. Take 5 units fast acting insulin; 1 hour later- 11.5 mmol/L; 2 hour later- 13.5 mmol/L; 3 hour later- 12.9 mmol/L; 4 hour later- 12.8 mmol/L.

Week 2, day 2: Wake up with 8.5 mmol/L have 1 cup egg white, 1 cup Oatmeal. Take 7 units fast acting insulin; 1 hour later- 12.5 mmol/L; 2 hour later- 12.5 mmol/L; 3 hour later- 11.5 mmol/L; 4 hour later- 11.3 mmol/L.

Week 2, day 3: Wake up with 12.5 mmol/L have 1 cup egg white, 1 Cup oats. Take 9 units of fast acting insulin; 1 hour later- 8.0 mmol/L; 2.25 hours later- 3.6 mmol; Correction 20G carbs; 2.5 hours later- 8.0 mmol/L; 4 hours later- 10.9 mmol/L

Although i've only been diabetic since April of 2015, i've been carb counting over 11 years so I rule out miscalculations of the amount of carbs I'm eating so I feel like something else is going on. The rising in the AM even when I don't eat confuses me but maybe someone else has a similar situation as myself whether it be a toujeo user or just another diabetic. Hopefully my post contributes in a positive way for people!
