Good Morning everyone,
I need some advice if anyone knows please. Ive been diabetic type 2 for about 19 years now and eventually had to take insulin and metformin slow release. The insulin made me gain weight and also the menopause contributed so I had a gastric bypass 2 years ago and am now a healthy weight and maintaining. Unfortuntely, although I no longer need insulin, I had diabetes for too long so had to continue on metformin (but not slow release as they dont work after gastric bypass). My latest HbA1c was 8 (HbA1c level DCCT aligned -8) (HbA1c - IFCC Standardised -64) so have now been put on Trajenta once a day as this I was told, was a diabetic drug that would not cause weight gain - but it has! Anyone else experienced a weight gain on it please?
Lastly as this is a relatively knew drug I have read it has controversy surrounding it, mainly that it has side effect issues of Pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. If I mention any of this to my doctor or diabetes nurse Im basically told "yes there is a chance of this, but without taking the drug your die of diabetic complications anyway!"
Because diabetes is now so widespread the drug companies are being pressurised to come up with treatments, being told "FDA is approving the drug, then asking companies to do a study on its safety,” according to Dr. Sidney Wolfe, founder and senior adviser for the Health Research Group at Public Citizen, told Drugwatch.com.
Your advice and input on this would be grateful as Im now quite worried to keep taking this drug and would be interested to hear opinions and if anyone knows of a more suitable diabetic drug that does not cause weight and has been deemed more safe?
Incidentally I was put on Byetta many years ago, when it first came out and it left me with gastric problems for life.
Thanks
Gill
