Whilst it will cost more, I would always ensure pre-existing conditions are covered. I feel the most likely thing to go wrong with my body is diabetes or something related and would hate not to be covered. Also, as there are so many complications associated with diabetes, I would be very concerned that the insurance company would use diabetes to get out of paying for heart attack, kidney disease, ...
I used John Lewis when I went to Columbia - it was relatively cheap compared to the others I saw and pretty clear conditions on how to claim back! Thankfully didn't have to do anything further!!
I used "insurewith" when we took my mum (with cancer' and daughter (type 1) away. Seemed ok - they had different levels you could buy as daughter was doing water sports but my mum wasnt
There isn't a big problem getting travel insurance for T1. They will ask questions about amputations etc (!) and may charge a small premium but just shop around with anyone and compare quotes.

I've gone with Just Travel Insurance, they get good reviews, cover the pre existing condition and are less than half the price of the others, and include America, Canada and the Carribean. Annual trip for less than £70 compared to £140+!
That's a good price. I use Insureand go and I think it cost Me £94 for Annual Insurance excluding USA, Canada and Carribean.
I will get a quote from Just Travel next time.
