Hi All

Having just been diagnosed Type 2, I now need to inform my travel insurance company. Can anyone tell me if their premiums went up when te did this?

I had enough trouble recently trying to take out annual insurance as three years ago I had my gall bladder removed because of stones which turned out to be cancer! Then had to have a liver op to make sure that it hadn't spread - which was all clear. I did not need medication or treatment and have been clear for nearly three years now. But, as soon as gall bladder cancer was mentioned I was turned down. They would insure me for individual trips but not annual, which meant that they would get more money out of me.

We are off skiing at the beginning of Feb and my husband says to leave it for now. Is that wise?? I have been on 1 x 500mg Metformin since 14th Jan for one week and yesterday( 21st Jan) went up to 2 per day. My first appointment with the Diabetes nurse after we come back.

Julie hi. In answer to your question. I informed my travel insurance co. When I was diagnoised with type 2 and tere was no increase to my premium. If you don't tell them and you need your insurance and they find out they won't pay out and as your going skiing I would strongly advise telling them. You never know what might happen on the slopes and I can speak from experience and so can Schumacher. Where are you going we are off to Serre Chevalier on 1 ffeb for a week and the snow is looking good.
Tell them it will give you piece of mind. And Bon Ski

Thanks Andy. I will definitely let them know. We are off t St Anton, Austria on 2nd Feb - can't wait.

Good Skiing.

Nope, I don't think Schumacher can speak from experience. He's still in a coma.

My premiums went up when I told them but maybe not all companies do ? I had to declare diabetes and all relevent meds, including statins. Mine is now approx double ! Depends where you travel though. Ins for diabetics in the USA is huge due to the astronomical price for treatment there.

So weather or not your premium increases is dependant on weather or not you use medication to regulate your blood glucose levels.

Thats nice as I started paragliding last year and I have to declare my type2 and provide a note from my GP that I'm still ok to fly. (its an insurance/safety thing)

Well, as advised, I called my insurance company - LV. They told me that if I wanted to be covered for anything that might happen that could be relevant to diabetes I would also have to be covered for any pre-existing medical conditions. This has now resulted in an extra cost.
We generally have three one week holidays each year, skiing being one of then and I went through several insurance companies that would not insure me annually because of the gall bladder cancer but were happy to charge me almost three times the cost by insuring me a week at a time.
Sorry about the rant - but this really bugs me!! :arghh:
