I have just received a quote for travel insurance with covers type 1 diabetes for £26 from Marks and Spencers. Has anyone else had dealings with them?

Hi Willogs,

Haven't had any dealings with them but check the small print. A lot of insurers claim that they cover diabetics. What they mean is that they won't turn you down (i.e. they will take your money) but they will not cover any pre-existing medical conditions. That means if you had a claim for flight cancellation or lost luggage, etc, they would pay. But if you claimed for emergency treatment for your diabetes while on holiday, or you had to cancel because of a diabetic emergency, then they wouldn't pay for that because it is a condition you had before you insured with them.

Hi Willogs,

I just checked M&S policy conditions online and they say their travel policy does not cover pre-existing medical conditions. You need to phone them and ask for a special quote and they will quote you a price if they decide they are willing to cover you.

I have put a request for insurance through to the last stage and it asks you, do you have any illnesses you wish to cover and I put type 1 diabetes which it found ok and the quoted me including this 'illness'. So i would have thought that would be me covered?? Don't want to pay out and not be covered.

Hi willogs.

As Dennis said, You need to double check by contacting them. The small print in these things is a minefield. I looked at it and it wasn't clear when you look at the Policy Document as to whether pre-existing conditions are covered. A phone call could save you a lot of heartache if anything goes wrong. My previous travel insurance only covered me for new problems, not pre-existing ones. It is not always clear !!

ken.

Have found 2 people in work who use Marks's and they are type 1 and said that you are fully covered by them. Great. Cheaper that I thought it would be.
