Hi I'm new. I am going on a white water kayaking trip in June and have not traveled with T1D before.
We are going by car does any one know if i need a travel letter?

In Europe yes from the diabetes team. My sister had this problem when going to the Netherlands last summer she’s also T1

I've never needed a letter to go abroad, I did have one for a while (until it disintegrated - didn't take long) but I never actually needed to show it for anything (but it may be useful to have one even if you don't need)
But then I've never driven whilst abroad or done things like a kayaking trip.

I’m only T2 but I’m insulin dependant I only ever take a copy of my prescription which they are happy with

The letter is helpful to explain to:

the security people why you are carrying sharp metal things in your hand luggage
the customs people why you have all those drugs/ampules

It's worth taking a letter in case immigration query your insulin. I've never been asked for a letter anywhere in the world but it's a sort of insurance.
Best to tell whoever is leading the activities as you are on insulin, just in case as activity tends to lower your BG

Hi Stephen, I don't mean to sound boring but don't forget your travel insurance, especially if you're kayaking! Have fun.

I am type 2 insulin dependent and I always carry a letter from my specialist which states what my medication is and that I must carry my medication with me on an aircraft, not in the luggage hold because of low temperatures. I have only been asked for the letter once!

Thanks everyone i'll get a travel letter. The trip is in the french alps white water kayaking, the first time with T1D however i have done this trip without diabetes.

I’ve traveled only to gulf regions on Holiday with a doctor letter but never was asked for it or about my diabetes. I am a tad bit concerned about traveling with my Libre sensor on though that will probably rise a few eyebrows I assume lol

Hi I’ve been insulin dependant for 13 years and ALWAYS carry a letter / copy of prescription when traveling. Most GP surgeries don’t charge for these ( though I hsve had to pay in the past), would recommend getting them laminated then you can keep them and reuse. And I always make sure my letter is with my medication when going across s boarder/ airport, and it’s in my bag and not with my partners luggage or anything - never had any problems but you gotta cover yourself enjoy your trip!!
