treating a hypo

ok great how many jelly babies do you eat, do you eat something after treating your hypo and how long do you have to wait till you get out of the hypo
 
Jelly babies or Lift (glucojuice)

My blood sugar at the time determines how many jelly babies I have, and also if I've recently eaten, due to eat etc. We're all different, but the usual advice is to eat 15g of rapid acting carbs, and finger prick test again after 15 minutes. If you use Libre it takes longer to show you're no longer hypo in my experience anyway.
 
2 JBs can raise me by 3mmol.

It depends what I am doing. If I happen to be gigging. Then I drink Lucozade.

Checking with a meter & going on how I feel will always be quicker that the lag on a sensor. 20 minutes from a hypo. Lol, the sensor can “suggest” I’m still low up to 45 minutes later?

If I’m having a basal Lantus low. I will follow up with longer acting carbs.or I’m guaranteed a recurrence…

Lol, I was BG tested by a nurse once, just prior to a procedure on my eye. It was something silly like 4.2. (The number spooked her.) I was instructed to eat half the bag of JBs & she would be back in an hour..
I told her I would indulge in one & we can crack on in 20 minutes.

I may have to wait a little longer to feel human if I’m in the 2s..

Depends how low it is, but I know they're 5 carbs each with helps

I don't tend to need anything after though as I'm on a pump with sensors so it stops the 'basal; when low
 
1 or 2 apples and then usually I feel fine in 20 minutes. Sometimes I have a hypo that needs more than that, so I keep eating fruit or whatever else that will get into my blood if the apples run out, until I feel better. Then I spike after varying amounts of time but I just wait until the rollercoaster evens out.
 
I used to find pineapple juice worked as rapidly as anything else. Don't know why, but at least I enjoyed the treatment! I would drink at least 25g worth of carbs and then something like a digestive.
 
I panicked (2.1) and called the ambulance because 1 litre of orange juice did nothing (maybe I needed to take Creon with the orange juice considering my circumstances?) I'd run out of glucojel jelly beans so couldn't try them.

I've now ordered 10 tubes of glutose15 because that's what the paramedics gave me and it worked *very* quickly (edit: they didn't give me 10 tubes, I've ordered 10 to have spares on hand). They're not cheap and I don't know if they're the best (but they can't be that bad if the ambulance had them), but a lot cheaper than what the ED at the hospital charged me.

I use Lift tablets.
I do not want something that tastes nice as others will take them if I leave them at home and others will want them if I treat myself when out.
I buy the Lift tablets in bulk from eBay.
 
mini can of Coke Cola then some digestives , always have glycogel with me when out that’s rapid too plus it’s available on prescription

Hypo treatments are not available on prescription for all.
They are definitely not available for me. I have to fund all my hypo treatment which is why I get them from eBay in bulk.

Yes I am in the UK. I have previously requested this from my doctor and see no point asking again as their policy is very clear.
And talking to others with Type 1, this is common practice.

Must be the old post code lottery thing again , I’m in Scotland , now but I use to get Glycogel on prescription when I was in Wales too .
 
Lucozade sport, it tastes nice :hilarious:

I don’t usually have anything to eat unless I’m driving within the next hour, usually then I’ll have anything I can get my hands on, at work I have jelly babies though :)
 
Lift tablets, lift juice or two jelly babies. If out walking I follow up with an apple as would remain low due to the exercise. If I spike too high after eating where possible I walk for 20 mins which takes me back in range. Works for me anyway. Means I don’t need to take additional insulin and back in target range quicker.
