Type of diabetes

I believe there is a form that diabtics can get that gives them exemption from costs for medical treatments, if you take medication for your diabetes, is this true, and can anybody get 1, with diabetes obviously!!! my mum is 83 and insulin dependant and my dad is 86 and tablet dependant, i control(or try to!) with diet and excercise! so im not eligible for the form, but i could do with getting 1 for my parents, any ideas about how to go about it?
 
Hi Heathem and welcome to the forum, as far as I am aware we (diabetics on meds) only get free prescriptions which your parents would already get being over 60 years of age. I dont think we can claim for any treatment as such but perhaps someone else can confirm this.

anybody with diabetes is entitled to the exemption card .I can't remember the process i'm sure i found it on the NHS website if your type 2 you still qualify so be quick before that stops they are valid for 5 yrs .Im t2 also .

JF they are over 60 so exempt anyway. Heathem is on Diet and exercise so not exempt if you are talking about prescription charges. It isn't anybody with Diabetes only those on medication.
 
thank you all for your input im not entirely sure where my parents have got this from about a form i know i was told i wasnt eligible because i dont use medication my dad has a touch of dementia too so maybe its just something hes heard somewhere!!! its quite possible.................wont be the 1st time!!!
But while i have you all here!!! another question....................sorry to be a pest!
my mum has insulin injections which my dad has to give ehr daily, is there a specific time of day she should have it? as he just seems to do it basically when he remembers!!!!
 
It sounds like it was the exemption form for prescriptions then. They don't need this as previously stated.

Is there anybody else helping your parents during the day ? If your Dad has Dementia then he is injecting your mum 'when he remembers' could be very dangerous for her ! Especially if he did this several times in a day !

Please seek advice from your local health centre re some help and also contact their GP as to the exact instructions for the times of injections. Different types of Insulin require different times and doses.
 
I'm not of the age to get free prescriptions but I have an exemption card from prescription charges. I asked the receptionist at the docs for a form, ticked the box saying diabetic on tablets and handed it back to the receptionist who gets a doctor to countersign it and sent it off for me. It took about 5 weeks to come through and is a credit size card.
 
If you are diabetic treated by meds then your GP should do this for you automatically

GPs are not obliged to initiate your application for an exemption card. It is up to the patient to request the form and ensure it is completed.

But a well organized Surgery GP or DN would probably do this for you
Same as booking all the other diabetic related regular tests feet ,eyes , Mine did ?

Both the GP and DN tuned me in ,,I remember was part of my DN first chat
i walked out passed reception the form was ready for my X

I revived a second card automatically due to second long term illness few years later ?

To be Honest i always forget the card and never had a problem I just tick exempt on the back of perspiration

No, my practise didn't do it automatically, I had to know to ask the receptionist for the form.

Though TBH I knew the presciptions were free once I was medicated and had been ticking the exempt box, without realising that I had apply for a card - oops, but the pharmacy were giving me the items free anyway!
 
There is also a form called an HC2, for low-income people, which helps with dental and optician costs 'cos at least one of those is NOT free for us OAPs. Can't remember which, at the moment. You get this from the surgery (probably some chemists also), and send off to Newcastle when you've completed it. They turn things round quite quickly, and each certificate lasts one year.

I believe we can also get some purchases free of VAT, but I'm not sure how wide-spread this is (ie, what items it covers) or how to go about getting it. I know the people who I get my socks from do a non-VAT price for diabetics.

I can purchase a new wheelchair with no vat attached, alterations to my home for wider doorways ramps
for wheelchair, Any extra aids i need not supplied by NHS or social services like kettle tipper
wooden decking installed for the garden,
My current electric wheelchair costs over £7500 plus vat for me a very helpful saving :mrgreen:

On high cost items eg electric wheelchairs
Vat office may come back to confirm disability the need for such equipment
from GP or social services
