Tried another refinement to the long run management today. Plan was a nice gentle 30km (ended up at 32) from Ely to Wicken and back along the river bank.
As normal, cut the basal dose back to 1U.
Slightly different with the bolus though, cut that back to 0.5U with my normal breakfast about 90 mins pre run, then half an hour before I had a bit of malt loaf to give an extra kick and see what happens. Then plan to eat to the meter as normal, but see what the massively reduced bolus does.
So overall, pre run I had 45g of carbs and 0.5U novorapid.
Timeline was like this
-30mins, 10.1, 15g carbs
0, 10.7, no carbs
5km, 4.2, 30g carbs
10km, 4.7, 30g carbs
15km, 6.9, none
20km, 4.4, 30g carbs
25km, 5.9, none
30km, 4.8, 30g carbs
32km, 4.1, none
+30min, 8.9
+60 min, lunch, 8.1, 60g carbs, 3 U bolus (25% redcution)
2 hours later 5.8
The drop from 30-32km came about, I think, because the carbs there were in the form of a snickers, and may have been slower release than the dates and gels earlier in the run.
Overall a decent run, and compared with last week's has about the same amount of carbs, roughly 40g per hour. I think the 0.5U bolus seems about right, but I think the carbs need to be spread a little more, at 20g every 5km vs 30g twice in 15km. Next race in 3 weeks, so it's good to have the plan in place.
