Two quick questions

Just playing with new Aviva Nano meter (courtesy of manufacturer :D ) and have started by testing breakfast. 2 Weetabix, sweetener, semi-skimmed milk. After 1 hour, 12. After 2 hours, 7.4. Is this ok, or should I avoid Weetabix?

What affect (if any) does coffee have on levels?

Sorry if these have been asked before.

Lynne

Hi Lynne.

I think you should ditch the Weetabix or at least try just one, a spike of 12 isn't good. Do you know what it was before the meal ?

As for Coffee, I drink loads of the stuff. Doesn't seem to have much effect on me, mind you that is home made instant or percolated etc. Only about 1 or 2 g carbs per mug. Caffeine is an issue for some people, again it's not for me.

Steer clear of Starbucks and Costa outlets with the fancy coffee's. They have massive amounts of carbs !! Stick with filtered and S/S milk.

Thanks Cugila

Before breakfast was 6.5 (only had sugar-free squash to take tablets).

Only drink black coffee (instant) at home. Occasionally have a latte as a treat when out.

What levels should I ideally be aiming for after eating, and how long after a meal is it best to check?

Lynne

Hi Lynne.

As a T2 your levels should be within these guideline figures.
Fasting(waking)..............between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals.............no more than 8.5 mmol/l.
If you can get the post meal readings lower then so much the better. Everybody here seems to have their own personal targets.

Check ideally at the 2 hr stage. If you eat certain foods which are digested more slowly and the Glycaemic effect takes longer to filter through then a test at 3 hrs is beneficial as well. Try testing with different foods and see what happens.

Starbucks are pretty good for coffee's actually, if you're careful what you're ordering.
The do sugar free syrups, soya and almond milks, as well as the cream filled nummies.

Stick to ometing soffee based rather than rea based, add some hazlenut syrup, splash of cream and it's all good.

Costa's arent as wide range, no syrups from there and not a great choice of milks.

Personally i like one slice of toast, lots of eggs, occasionally half a bagel with soft cheese and pastrami.
Weetabix is a good brekkie, but not for diabetics usually. Lots o steady release carbs is great for 'normal' people, but as you can see a reading of 12 isn't.

Hi CP.

A Starbucks Grande Americano has only 3g carbs. A filter coffee.

Take a look at some of the rest of the line up, including sugar free syrups as well and you might just want to steer clear like I said before. You need to be VERY selective as some of them contain enough carbs to give me a meal !! :(

Exactly what happens to me with Weetabix - or any other cereal for that matter even porridge.

My advice would be to avoid all the usual cereals for breakfast - even the 'good' ones. The only one that I've found that works OK for me is Lizi's granola - it's a nut-based cereal that I buy in Tesco from the special foods section it's not found with the usual cereals.

Luckily (?) I live a good couple of hours from the nearest Starbucks. But a local coffee shop does a great latte. No syrups, or anything fancy like that :)

Will be going shopping Monday (pay day) to stock up on food & testing supplies.
