Type 1 advice on low carb

Ok...learn from today..

Ketosis is different to ketoacidiosis.... the latter is DKA and occurs normally when levels are v high for a longer period of time (this varies person to person). So I cant tell you a amouunt of time or levels for you when DKA, ketoacidiosis would affect you.

Levels for me are 20 upward and I can feel very ill, very quickly (within 1 hour)... but I am pretty odd with my T1....

I am keto. I eat less than 20 carbs per day and take small insulin doses. I landed on vlc to avoid hypos. I love bernsteins laws of small numbers. Low carb, low insulin doses, lower chance of hypos. I HATE hypos

Ref carbs and qtys, you have to do what you are happy with.

Example.. me. I have absolutely no hunger. I never feel hungry. Not because I'm an anorexic or tryng to lose weight... but that is just me. So I can personally eat very little but I am very nutitionally aware and also aware of what certain foods are needed and what they do to my bloods...
I need broccoli everyday because I have anaemia and cant take iron tablets or liquid and other foods that give me iron dont travel in my colon.

So with my mashed veg and limited foods I still dont feel hungry. I dont have cravings.

My advice would be to stick to say 100g for a week.. see how you feel.. look at foods and make sure you are getting enough b12 and folate and iron. B12 and folate is mainly added to breads and cereal so check out real foods that you like that have these vitamins in. Folate is essential for women, especially of child bearing ages etc...

For me I found heavy dairy products daily were bad for me and my cholesterol. I'm better off having avocado, EVOO, and one single cream coffee.

If you feel ok on 100g for a week, with energy etc try 90g the next week or 75.

Also depending which basal you are on... my consultant goes mad with me if I alter my tresiba before 3 days at a set level. He prefers me to wait 5 days.

As your bolus needs reduce, your basal ones will too... but again you need to establish how quickly your basal needs are falling for yourself.

Humans dont adjust naturally or easily to change whether mentally or physically... so I would advise doing things in a paced manner that you can cope with...

Thanks so much.

I take it you mean 100g per day, for a week? I find myself fairly happy around the 60g a day mark.

I may try what you said though. I'm also trying to knock sweetener on the head too.

Thanks guys.

Yes, 100 per day. Lol...

Sweeteners are full if chemicals. Best avoided. I wasnt told I had "aspartame intolerance" in 2003 and found out in 2015 after asking to have a review of my GP notes. It was killing me. Of course, in my day I was told I could drink diet coke, eat sugar free gum etc etc.... it was killing me.

If you think happy around 60g per day... try it for a month... its 28days to make or break a habit... if you decide in 28days that you want to have a binge or craving etc then dont worry, just raise the carbs a little. If you ok for 28 days then decide whether you want to lower or ok continuing.

Nothing is set in stone. Nothing is a failure... just make sure that you remain liking the foods and dont get bored etc....
