Hi I am 16 in 4 weeks and want
To start riding a motorbike on the road and was wondering does any one else here own a motorbike ?? Thanks

Hi, I've recently sold my motorcycle. If your question is, can Type1 Diabetics ride motorcycles, yes they can, as long as you have a valid license and your doctor says you are fit to drive / ride.

I had one a LOOONg time ago when I wass young.
BE careful!

I've had Type 1 for 10 months and passed my bike test in January! (I'm a 37 year old biker chick!) After diagnosis my license is now restricted to three years but other than that I've had no problems with insurance or anything else. Just make sure you check before riding and I always take my testing kit and a snack out with me!

Ju`st one thing I would say to you - I think 16 is too young for a bike - I've been driving nearly 20 years and think that you need lots of experience of roads before you start on a bike. Sorry to sound like an old fart but that's my experience! My son is 15 and keeps saying he's having one as soon as he's he's 16 but I say NO!!!! (and I always win!! he! he!)

You are right. These days risk is 1000 % higher than in 1960s when I started. I want to continue cautiously at 75 having been diagnosed type 1

I wouldn't ride a street bike. I've ridden motocross and offroad for 55 years and hung up my helmet last year. Since it was quite a lot of exercise with the offroad riding I'd start off around 8.0 to 10.0 and monitor it hourly.

You need to be at least 24 before applying for a full motorbike licence. At 16 you can ride mopeds with a maximum speed of 45mph

Anybody wanting to ride a motorbike needs to read the Police Motorcycle Roadcraft book cover to cover before commencing.

There is not much room for error on the UKs roads today & learner bike lack the power to escape from trouble so you have to be on your guard and ride accordingly.

Check the Blood Sugar levels before & during as the speed you move on a bike requires split second decisions that could be compromised with fluctuating blood sugars.

I rode from 16 when diagnosed to 27 with only one crash into a Volvo & straight over bonnet not my fault but accident do happen. It could have been avoided as I had read the roadcraft book but when you are young & riding a GT250 X7 with Microns open carbs & clip ons these things happen.

So being a Diabetic makes no difference if you want to ride a bike just make sure you do it better.
