Hi guys im new to this, from everything iv been reading all i c is LOW CARB or NO CARB. I live on carbs lol im a very fussy eater and love bread potatoes etc, but i have been using a carb counter for the last week and acording to this i am still within my daily amounts eating everything i like ie: bread and potatoes so is this ok?

Depends how your BG levels are I guess. Nobody will tell you that you must change your diet, although some will advise you, ultimately, it's your life. Not everyone is low carb or no carb. There are many here who manage just by reducing carbs. You don't have to give up everything, maybe just try to reduce them. Up to you if you try it or not. Good luck, Mo

Being type 1 does give the flexibility of eating carbs and adjusting qa for quantity eaten. As you are not resistant to the insulin being injected you are simply replacing what your body would be producing and using if you were not type 1. If you are a good weight, getting good results pre and post meals id say carry on as you are.

At the mo there still trying to find the right amount of insulin as only went on it thu at the minute I'm on 6 before breakfast 4 lunch 6 dinner and 10 at night before bed my bm seems to be 8.5 morning and lunch but then goes to anything between 14-20 after dinner even tho i think I'm eating the right things! For dinner last night I had 3 low fat sausages with two small home made roast potatoes red cabbage carrots and Coliflour with little amount of gravy and my bloods shot up after dinner

Keep a detailed record of pre/post meal readings. Sounds like fixed amounts at meal times. Being so new could be your insulins needs adjusting. This would need to be done weather low/reduced or normal carb. Keep in touch with your team as its so early for you.

Good luck - it really is trial and error to start with and getting the right ratio's to suit you.

I learned after over a year that the only way I could improve my BG was to reduce my carbs, I was constantly yo-yo-ing, so hypo to hyper a few times a day, and it was affecting my moods so have now cut out all sugar, pasta, rice, breads etc, I still eat a very small amount when I fancy it but it's not part of my daily diet and my moods have improved alot, I personally think it's down to whatever suits you, if you keep good control and can eat carbs and take the right doses without going high then fab don't change, but if you need to improve your control which you will only learn over time then look at how you can cut out carbs.

In time get yourself onto a DAFNE course as this will help your knowledge hugely, otherwise stay on here and talk to others

As the others have said, if you can control your diabetes without giving up carbs then there's no reason for doing so, wait a while and see how you get on and then decide if you want to reduce them or not.

I'm type 1 and eat around 180g of carbs a day (a little more on a weekend) which isn't high carb but it isn't low either, I eat and enjoy bread, potatoes, pasta, oats and root veg as part of a healthy well balanced diet, however I'm on a basal/bolus insulin regime that allows you to adjust your insulin to the carbs that you eat. on fixed insulin doses it's a less flexible routine.

As you settle down with the insulin you need to discuss having the Basal/Bolus regime with the nurse and also doing carb counting (adjusting the rapid bolus to match the carbs you have at the meal). Noblehead mentioned this and I'm also on that regime. For interest what amount of daily carbs has the nurse set you? I aim for a similar amount to Noblehead, and a bit less when I can, to keep blood sugar swings down and also avoiding weight gain. BTW are you on mixed insulin, just 24 hour Basal or Basal/Bolus already?

Hi I am on a basal/bolus regime but only went on it thu so the nurse hasn't really spoke much to me I'm back there tomorrow he didn't want to give me to much info at once he just showed me how to take the insuline and made sure I was able to do it on my own, he then rang me for to check I was ok and upped my dose when he heard my bm havnt spoken to him since x

Iv been righting everything down since thu and according to my records iv been having on average 210 carbs a day so maybe I will reduce it c if it makes a difference I'm just going to find it very hard to change my diet I'm a creature of habit and find it hard thinking of thing to have for lunch that arnt salad, sandwiches or rice dish.

On normal days I probably eat around 150- 180g of carb. I'll eat more on occasions (and less sometimes). I don't think of this as being low carb, I was originally told to eat about 50 for breakfast, 50 for lunch and 80 for dinner (though being in France they would prefer I ate the larger meal at lunch)
You can still have a sandwich for lunch and not eat anymore than 50 g carb. Just checked M and S sandwiches for an example and they range between 30 and 44g/carb. So you could have a salad alongside and a piece of fruit.
My evening meal tends to comprise roughly half a plate of veggies, a quarter of starches (try to choose low GI) and quarter 'protein'. Normally I might have something like plain yoghurt and berries or berries and cream for dessert.
When I was first diagnosed shopping took a lot longer with label reading, carb counting books etc You do get to know what things are good for you and how much, I think we are all creatures of habit.
We can bolus for things and but I think that you get a sort of feeling that some things are worth the insulin and some things just aren't.
That's very personal as one blogger writes.http://www.bittersweetdiabetes.com/2012/10/bolus-worthy.html

hi,i'm new to type 1 as well, but i've done a carb counting day at the hospital, and as far as i can gather,as long as you count your carbs right and offset it with insulin, you should keep you bm readings between 5-7. it seems to be working well for me, and i love all sorts of carbs as well. i don't want to stop living, and i don't want to put weight back on, and want to enjoy food, its just a case of counting right, and eating right....if you haven't done it already, download to diabetes carb counting sheet from diabetes.co.uk....it should help alot
