Type 1: Diabetes treatment in another country!

Hey guys,
Been following this forum for a while now and find it very helpful. Bit of an intro bout myself.been diabetic since 97, 25Years old, really gave up on myself a few years back for a few years, drinking alcohol constantly, not taking insulin properly for years besides the lantus. Have it all under control now with my Hba1c being 6.8 last I checked and all blood tests coming back good, besides the eyes all seems ok.
Now why I'm here. my girlfriend is saying that we should move to germany (she's german) because of how great the treatment for diabetics is over there compared to here in Ireland but Im happy with my doctors and diabetic team. Im getting laser here frequently enough and feel moving over there and looking to transfer everything and finding a new team is off putting. Is there really that much of a difference in quality of treatment in different countries?
Anyone know if this is true? Any help is appriciated as Im kinda all over the place over this at the moment.

Ask yourself this? Is your girlfriend T1. ;) Then work it from there.... Good luck!
 
Okay, I do not know how it works there but here-you have to be a citizen here to be covered with our affordable healthcare act. So with UK voting to get out of the EU and her being your girlfriend rather than wife, would you be covered there? I really have no idea-just a question to consider.
 
would you only be moving to Germany for treatment of your diabetes?? I'm irish and feel our treatment is great, being able to get everything we need on the long term illness book say compared to the UK where u need to get prescriptions for everything and fight for any changes that are made, would Germany be the same as here or the UK?? If you are moving for work or something fire away but I wouldn't move country just for diabetes treatment, you would be a non national and may not be entitled to anything....

Hi Alex,
I've lived in Germany for ~14 years but only been a diabetic for ~ 5 of those years.As a result I can't compare the treatment received in Germany to other countries, only based on what I've heard on this forum.

There are some benefits that you may not get in Ireland, such as here you are classed as 50 % disabled and receive an extra 5 days holiday , tax breaks etc etc On the negative side you have to pay a percentage towards medication such as insulin.

I have to go see my Endo every 3 months due to health insurance stipulations, which I find annoying and could probably get away with every 6 months or even longer. Might be good if you having control problems or need support.

If you've got any specific questions let me know. Where are you looking to move to in Germany?

The old saying 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' comes to mind here.

In other words, if your happy with your diabetes care in Ireland why would you want to move to Germany for that reason alone?

Guys! Where is your sense of romance..? :D The OP's reason for relocation is about a girl.. ;)
 
Can't answer the question, but son of shar67 moved to Germany 2 years ago and loves it, I have been out for a holiday and can see the attraction of living there, unfortunately the Brexit thing is going to cause him problems.
If you are from Southern Ireland you will still be part of EU so Brexit won't have the same implications.
 
I'm sure German diabetic care is probably just as good as anywhere, they're not a 3rd world country put it that way - I don't think your should let that hold you back.

If you love this German süsse and have solid plans to have somewhere to live and means to live, why not?
 
I have no idea about treatment in Germany but if its anything like here in France,,,follow your heart
