Hi all, being type 1 myself and being involved in an overseas dog rescue I've recently been contacted by a volunteer in Bulgaria who's rescued a dog that transpires has type 1 also. Poor creature was/is in a dreadful condition, literally skin and bones, blind and suffering from nerve damage. They've managed to stabilize her bloods at around 14 mmols which while not being brilliant is far better than the high 20's she was previously. She is on a raw meat diet, no carbs at all, and is, as far as I know, getting very well looked after and her condition has significantly improved while in the rescue. I've sent some bits and pieces over to Bulgaria to assist in them being able to test her bloods on a regular basis and they have been able to locate a suitable insulin fairly local to where they are. Just wondering if anyone else on here has a diabetic dog who could pass on some advice and tips etc, especially regarding working out insulin levels/requirements. I'm guessing that even though her levels have stabilized that to get them down further will require insulin but as the rescuer is getting very little support over in Bulgaria she's looking to me to help and advise her on how to proceed. Her local vet's have 'recommended' an expensive 'diabetic dog' food but I'm adamant that she steers clear of this and continue with the raw meat which is partly because it's basically carb free but also it's what my own dogs are thriving on so I suspect that any insulin requirement is going t have to be used on a basal basis. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, we have had a few threads on diabeticdogs in the past, and every time we do, I pipe up and encourage the use of Raw Food, because of its low carb nature.
I have no idea what the expensive Vet Diabetic food contains, but if it has carbs, it is just going to bounce up insulin requirements.
