Type 1 Diabetic Recently Diagnosed CKD but doctors didn't tell me.

HI all. Sorry I need to vent. I'm Type 1 Diabetic for 41yrs and recently discovered by accident that I also have CKD stage 4. The annoying thing is that when I questioned this with my doctors, I was told that I have had it for at least 15 years and they just assumed I knew! I have had to push for a referral to a Kidney Specialist and now the diabetic nurse wants a chat(!) about how high my HBC1 is. It is 6.9 (old term). I have no advice or help just told to carry on!

This is one of many reason why I look at my blood test results online on the surgery system and I always look at the kidney function test results. Never trust your surgery to keep you fully informed about test results - always keep an eye on them yourself. I have to say CKD stage 4 is not good (my wife went thru stage 5 and was lucky in getting a transplant last year). There isn't much you can do to affect kidney function but as there are different types of failure the long term effect will vary. An optimal diet can help keep the various blood factors in a good range and the consultant should guide you on that. Long-term high BS can cause kidney damage but your 6.9 is good. BTW if you use Ibuprofen - don't as it's one of many causes of kidney damage.

Unfortunately our surgery is not that advanced. You can even book appointments online. I have managed to get a copy of my bloods and everything is within range and really good, except the kidney function. Hopefully if I do get a referral someone will tell me what to do etc. And thankfully no I do not take ibuprofen. Thank you.

Hello, i can relate to you frustration. I have recently moved. At my old GP, it was impossible to get hold of blood test results as they thought the patients should't see the test results and interpreted themselves. I have recently moved and my new Gp seems to let all patients have an option to access to full medical records via patient access - i am very pleased with this. We should be fully informed of the test results details.
