TYPE 1 My nephew, aged 7, has been diagnosed after a hypo.

looking for any advise he sugar levels were 49 on addmition spend 2 days in icu now on iccilin any adive you can offer will be great him mum isnt very tech
 
Hi. You may want to look at the T1 forum. Do ask question there. It must be very difficult with 7 year old. Hopefully the surgery nurse or clinic will support his mum but these forums are very good. I assume your nephew is on two insulins i.e. a dialy 'Basal' and a meal-time 'Bolus'? His mum may not yet have been told about adjusting the meal-time Bolus for the mealtime carbs? If not do see if she can ask the nurse about this when things settle as matching the Bolus to the carbs will reduce hypo risk. She'll need to measure quite often to start with 2-3 hours after a meal to check your nephew is below 8-9 mmol but above around 5 mmol. The figure of 49 you give is not too serious so the diabetes appears to have been caught fairly quickly.

I'd have said 49 was high if that was his blood sugar. I have Type 1 and mine was approx 25 on diagnosis. The four shots a day is pretty normal. It sounds a lot, but it's to get control of his blood sugar and help his body deal with the food he eats. I'm guessing his mum is being shown how to do the injections? If so, reassure her it gets easier to do.

Ah, thanks. I may have been wrong. If it was a spot blood test then 49 is extremely high. I thought it might have been what is called an HBA1c test. Four shots is the Basal/Bolus regime which is good, so when things settle just discuss carb-counting if not already doing that.
