Hi all!

I'm Kimberley, 27 years old, been type 1 diabetic for the last 10 years.

I'm new to this forum, I don't know anyone who is type 1, no one in my family has it either...

I'm hoping to get a bit of advice and support through the forum as I'm going to start a LCHF eating regime in the hopes of getting better control of my BG levels :)

Happy new year when it comes, I hope 2017 is a fab year for you

Welcome @kimrooney89 :)

Ask away :) What's your HbA1C? Is there any aspect of control you're finding hard eg spikes after meals?

Do you have the Type 1 'bible' - Think Like A Pancreas?

My last HbA1c was 8.5, however that was a few months ago. My next appointment with my DSN is at the end of January.

I've had numerous telephone conversations with her regarding my lack of control since my GP changed my needles to another brand but there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the highs and lows I'm having.

It was her who suggested i try LCHF as a last resort. No I don't have 'the bible' but I'll have a look online and see where I can pick up a copy from :)

If you think it might be connected to your change of needles, then ask to be changed back. I know that some people here have had their needles changed and haven't been happy. You need what works for you :)

I'm presuming you carb count and adjust your insulin to match?

For good control, getting the basal right is a crucial foundation, and then you can look at your meal insulin to carb ratios :)

Have you done a basal test? What insulins do you take? Is it possible you may have some insulin resistance?

I have tried to get changed back to BD Microfine needles, however so far my GP has refused to do so as the new needles are 'more cost effective'.

Today is literally my first day of LCHF, so far it seems as though it will be a lot of trial and error, BG monitoring and adjusting my Novorapid. I'm also on a split dose of Levemir in the morning and evening.

I've been told by my DSN that I have Dawn phenomenon and that I also seem to be insulin resistant. I think LCHF is the last resort as we've tried DAFNE and Novorapid is the 3rd fast acting insulin I've been on in the last 10 years

Have you been offered Metformin? That might be worth a try.

Yes, LCHF isn't a magic answer as you have to consider bolusing for protein, delayed rises from fat, and also physiological insulin resistance (caused by the diet).

And push for those needles! My surgery tried to swap my meter and stopped when I protested (wanted to give me a cheap, **** meter because it was cheaper).

I haven't been offered Metfomin, I will raise this with my DSN as I have an appointment in two weeks.

I'll give it a go and see how I get on with it, I've found a few threads on the forum which offer support to beginners of LCHF. Thank you :)

If the Dawn Phenomenon is bad then a pump might also be a possibility :)

it sounds as though you put a lot of effort into managing your D :)

if you are having these issues despite your best efforts , perhaps it would be worth having a chat with your DSN in January about the possibility of going on a pump.

Since pumping ( 16 months for me ) I have managed to eliminate my dawn phenomenon:)

( it is worth looking into in my opinion ):)

I have enquired about a pump numerous times as I feel that I meet the NICE guidelines..My DSN informed me at our last appointment that 'a pump isn't an easy fix'.
I'm aware that there is a lot of work that goes in to having a pump, but I'm really struggling to have any control what so ever. I even looked at the possibility of buying a pump myself - but my GP then advised me that I would then need to buy all of my insulin as the pump isn't NHS supplied...
Unfortunately that's not a possibility for me financially. I'll broach the subject of a pump with my DSN and consultant at my next appointment.
Thank you so much for your advice :)

I think we're on a roll here now :)
if you are at least thinking of a pump there is a great organisation that can help
they are called Input link here http://www.inputdiabetes.org.uk/

it is a fab charity that assists Diabetic persons to access technology ( Pumps , CGM's )
most of the people that run it are Diabetic ( and a really friendly bunch of people too )

also -- it is not always just about meeting NICE guidelines if your quality of life is being affected.
( this is where Input can help )
