Is it normal to be really hungry, just been diagnosed and started insulin, before my appetite wasn't the best now all I want to do is eat.

Yes, I think it is normal. Before diagnosis, you probably lost a lot of weight and now your body is trying to 'rebuild' itself. Concentrate on eating well and taking your insulin as prescribed, and your body will gradually stabilise itself.

I found I was hungry for quite a few weeks, but it slowly settled to normal levels of hunger :) It will also help if you can keep your blood sugar in range as much as possible :)

I have managed to keep it between 10 and 15 which I'm told is safe, I always take it before big meals, it is weird. My moods better and I it's like I have new muscles and energy all of the sudden.

Hey Josh - it will take some time for your body to heal and settle into a routine with insulin and food. It's important to just get used to a routine of taking insulin, eating and getting used to living with your type 1, if you need to eat then do so, as you are taking your insulin before food then I guess you have been given some guidance on counting your carbs with taking the right dose of insulin ? as long as you can get used to understanding how much insulin to take as well as regular testing then don't worry about the hunger it will fade in time. We are all here to help so any questions shout ;)

Nop, I was told when I next go in to see my diabetic nurse and the rest I'll be shown how to do all that.

Insulin helps put the nutrients into your cells. I had lost a significant amount of weight before diagnosis and was skin and bones. Once starting on insulin I gained a lot of mucpscle tone back Andy the weight I needed to gain.
As others have said, after your body heals and is well nourished the hunger should subside.

What insulin are you on? Basal and bolus? Did they just tell you to take a certain amount per meal and eat certain meals? How many times a day donyiu test your blood sugar?

Hi,

Wow, it's almost like they gave you a car, but neglected the suggested driving lessons..

Do you keep a diary of blood tests, dosage, & food?

Here is a little info on what insulin does.. It will answer the big why.
Lol, it's not a "dark art".
