I was diagnosed 6am on the 18th with a blood glucose of 35( I was celebrating my birthday which is actually today.)

I haven't really been told anything yet as im still in hospital and im more in shock if anything

They just checked my blood again and said 13.2 and they said another thing which was 0.3

I have been told there hoping I can go today so can anyone enlighten me on what my day entails.

Heya :-) I wouldnt expect going home over the weekend. They need to get your levels down and I think they rarely discharge patients during the weekend anyway. Best of luck and have some good rest. Not the best place for birthday but I hope you a have a nice day

Welcome to the forum Steve.

The 0.3 reading will be your ketone levels, they should discuss with you how to test for ketones before you are discharged, if you have any other questions or concerns then do come back and ask.

Not the best way to spend your birthday but best wishes anyway.

Happy birthday! What a rotten present!

Everything will be explained to you before going home. You will be told what your target should be for your blood sugar and will be given a monitor and strips.
If they follow the NICE guidelines, you'll be given a quick acting insulin pen (possibly Novorapid), to be used before meals, and a long acting insulin pen (possibly Levemir) to be used at the same time every day.

It all seems quite daunting but you do get used to it. You might meet a DSN (diabetes specialist nurse) before you go home. They are usually very nice and understanding and will explain everything you need to know. You might even be given a phone number or email address in case you need advice at home.

Good luck and welcome to the club (it's not that bad, honest!)

It happened to me over Christmas so I can understand it is bad timing for the diagnosis, I hope you get out soon as hospital food even what they consider a diet suitable for diabetics won't help.

Happy Birthday, Steve :) Yes, diabetes is a nasty present. The first few weeks will be hard, but I promise it does get easier once you get a grip on it and get your blood sugar under control. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions while you're in hospital. Understanding is key to controlling diabetes.

Have a read round the forum if you get a chance, and once you're feeling a little better, ask as many questions as you want. :)

I'll tag @daisy1 for you. She has some basic info.

Ah Steve that's seriously bad timing! But happy birthdayyyy

Make sure you ask any questions you think of while you are there, although I imagine you won't really think of them while you head is all over the place trying to understand everything. Have a look around here, there is so much to take in but you will get there, everyone here is so lovely and helpful, nothing is too silly to ask

Some people are upset if they read about or are warned about possible complications of diabetes. It was actually the best thing I did when I read about them (in hospital after diagnosis). It made me determined that it wouldn't happen to me, if I could do something about it, so I've tried to keep within my target as much as possible.

You will get to know what you can eat and what effect different foods have on your blood sugar. You'll have folk saying things like, "Should you be eating that?" It's up to you how you deal with that - as far as I'm concerned I answer (or not), depending on who's asking (sometimes it's just a straightforward "Yes!")

Don't try to take in too much at once. Give yourself a break. I know it will be on your mind all the time but do other things while in hospital. Catch up on reading, t.v., e-mails etc. Don't spend all your time trying to find out everything about diabetes. You need time and you'll learn more each day, sometimes without realising it.

Thanks for the support and messages and i intend to follow as much as your guys advice as possible and I now actually don't think it will be as bad as I originally thought
