hi, I need some help with high reads (18/19 1st thing in the morning and through out the day) I'm on holiday in Corfu and it's very hot. I thought hot weather made the insulin more sensitive and so I was more likely to hypo while here so came stocked up with glucose tablets etc. But it's been the complete opposite. Ive only been type 1 for 18 months and am on Levemir and Novorapid. My control at home is good. Now I don't know whether I should increase my Levemir and keep upping the novorapid too? I am sticking to low or no carb meals and I'm still reading very high. I've had to walk hard and swim hard to try and get my levels down through exercise. I'm grumpy when I'm this high too! With no internet at the place we are staying I feel a bit cut off but we've just come to a bar with iPads so I can get some guidance.

If you're at 18-19 for the whole day, you should test for ketones as you may be at risk of DKA.

Could your insulin have become ineffective? That's the first thing to do - change to a fresh insulin.

If you've eliminated that and illness, hot weather can make some people high so you may need to increase your basal. Proceed extremely cautiously if you do that. In the meantime, if you're confident doing correction doses, use your fast-acting insulin to get your levels down - again, using a new cartridge/vial just to be sure it's not been damaged.

Also if you're drinking carbonated soft drinks, are the bar staff understanding that you're after diet drinks? For example what we call Diet Coke here is often referred to as Cola Light. Definitely test for Ketones though if you can.

The heat sends me high also, we're having a heat wave here at the moment and I'm getting some erratic readings. Have you exposed your insulin to high temperatures ? Mine went off last night after a trip to a restaurant, although I had a low carb feast and covered it with the correct dosage, I still went unusually high. After a further two 'largish' corrections doses I was still high, insulin changed and all was well again!

Thank you all so much. I will take on all advice and just enjoy my holiday... this is such a good site for getting real information from people that just know what it's like. You are really all very good to take time to reply. Kate
