Type 1: Vomiting

Hello all...my good friend's 11 year old son was recently diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic. His blood sugars fluctuate drastically from time to time. The issue that they are having is he has fallen into a pattern of eating ok, then two days later, he begins to vomit, alot. This poor little guy weighs less that 55lbs and has already lost 11 lb in a week alone. He was just released from the hospital where he was on a bland diet to give his stomach a rest. Gastroenterology is at a loss as to what the cause is. Has anyone here experienced something similar and what helped? Any info would be so helpful. Thanks!!

So sorry to hear this, truly heartbreaking.....

Has there been any connection to the vomiting and high BG and/or ketone levels..?
I just spoke to her and she said that the blood sugars more often than not are around the 120-160 ranges and the ketones are fine, but he seems to feel better when his blood sugars are higher. He was diagnosed about a month ago and his blood sugar was almost 600, but had no symptoms, other than increased thirst, urination, and hunger..the classics. Once insulin was thrown in the mix, they've had a difficult time. I was thinking maybe gastoparesis or the like. :( He is so pitiful.

That sounds awful for him : (

I'm presuming theyve checked for things like coeliac disease?

Maybe his Brain must ajust to the lower Numbers and he is sick like you know Seasick kind because his Brain cant
Figure out What is happening

I did womit 7 month 24 hour all days when pregnant Some People have a very fragile Brain to physical changes , had to be in a drop most of the time

Yes..they are currently running a full panel of tests, including celiac disease, food allergies, drug sensitivities. They are hoping that they do not have to do endoscopy/colonoscopy because of his age, but it's looking like they may have to.

I was going to say the same, 2 of my symptoms, prior to be diagnosed with coeliac was vomiting and loss of weight.

Did they mention coeliac disease to you as type 1 and coeliac can go hand in hand ? edited to say, I see he may be tested for coelaic and allergies.

If he has coeliac and diagnosed, he will be on on a strict diet and he will feel so much better. It must be heartbreaking for you to watch him suffering so much and being so ill with vomiting, will make him feel so awful and wear him out too. Sending (((((((((((hugs))))))))) to you both x

Sadly Type 1s do,have a greater risk of coeliac disease so it's a sensible thing to check.

The other thought I had was a gastric bug that had maybe taken advantage of his weakened immune system prior to his diagnosis with Type 1.

I really hope the tests give an answer without an endoscopy. How miserable for him to get Type 1 and then be so ill like this.

Please do update this thread if you get any answers.

Hello - today i feel very nauseous, shaky and a bit groggy myself.. this is down to a 'false hypo'.
The past few days/a week my sugar levels have been on the high side (because i needed to increase my background insulin in the morning - Levemir) which i have done now.. and today my sugar levels have been within a good range (around 5, no higher) and because of this my body thinks it's low and i feel as if i'm on the edge of a hypo but i'm actually not. I have felt quite sick the last few hours but not as though i'm going to actually be sick just nauseous and shaky, seasick is a good way to describe it. I know this will pass i just need to stick it out and then my body won't have hypo like symptoms when my sugars are in normal range. Is this maybe what's happening to your friends son? But then..i suppose that doesn't explain the vomiting! I hope you find out the problem and he starts to feel better, poor little boy. x
