Hi All,

Now before this sets out to be a shouldn't be doing this and that type response please bare in mind that i've got reasons for everything i do and i've been told by my professionals that i am safe to do it the way i do providing i monitor and record my results.

Anyway, For the past few days i've been feeling rather "not normal" so i have been testing more frequently and keeping an eye on things but everything has been fine (must just be me) i got up this morning and as usual went to the kitchen for my regular breakfast coffee. I have my coffee with 2 spoons of coffee (strong i know) and 2 spoons of Canderel Sweetener (which i believe is artificial sweetener so better for me). As i've not been feeling great i've lost my appetite but i've been monitoring my levels.

I've only had 2 cups of coffee = 4 sweeteners, and no food or anything else.

My Lunch Time Reading was 9.3 (for anyone who knows me thats VERY good for me, i'm usually 20+)
but my evening meal reading, without food and 1 cup of coffee, 1 for breakfast and 1 about 2ish my BG Level was 15.7, I've taken +4 corrective units of insulin to hopefully get this to come down to a normal level, I only drink Diluted squash which is 0 carbs 0 sugars with an occasional can of Pepsi Max which is 0 Carbs 0 Sugar.

Does anyone know why without food/carbs my sugar levels increased? Artificial sweeteners are not supported to increase your BG and Canderel are artificial according to this site ... Canderel Info

as bit of extra info, I'm whats known as a DAFNE (Dosage Adjustment For Normal Eating) Graduate and have completed the course 2 years ago but fell behind with the progress due to other health problems and i'm trying to get back into it ready for next year when hopefully i'll be having a vasectomy reversal (won't do it without controlled sugars)

My Last HBA1C was 91 although the highest reading i've had in the last week was my evening meal one today and my lowest was bed time last night at 4.3.

I'm hoping someone can shed some light onto this situation i'm facing as its totally baffled me and even with 4 teaspoons of sugar my BG shouldn't have increased that much.

Thanks in Advance for any help offered and please don't dig at me for not eating 3 square meals and following the plan e.t.c. i'm on Oramorph. Tramadol. Etoricoxib, Pregablin, and a few others tablets as well

I'm just now getting ready to take the wife out to eat so i apologise for those who reply quick as i won't respond immediately and maybe not until tomorrow depending on how late we are getting in.

Best

Dan

hey ... it´s hard to tell why your blood glucose is so high without eating... but my own experience is that my fasting blood glucose is the highest I ever get on a daily basis... and I do this "fasting " called 16/8 or in my case 17/7 where I do not eat the 17 hours of my day from 19 o´clock untill 12 o´clock...

today my blood glucose was 7.3mmol and that was the highest of all in 1,5 month and that is even I do not eat more than 1000 calories pro day plus the amont of calories from my training...

I did so much training yesterday plus 725calories but only ate 525 of them on top of my 1000 calory diet..and then I woke up to this bloody high blood glucose..

It seems we are many that have a very high fasting blood glucose , and that for many of us it only keeps going up untill we have our breakfast, maybe thats the reason that created our diabetes in the first place,; that our livers are too active in creating sugar for our bloodstream...

a lot of diabetics also in here have this problem and some have solved it by breaking their fast before getting out of bed with 3-4 almonds or some cheese-finger for kids , or a few other nuts or alike high fat foods in a very small amount..

I only have this problem left to have a normal blood glucose , and I hate that my fasting seems to make the problems even bigger... but on the other hand I´m glad that i Loose 2 Pounds every week and untill ive lost what I want , I will keep on fasting as it at least do decrease the amount of insuline that is far too high in diabetics 2 in general

I also do only eat less than 100 g of carbs but admit it was in the high end yesterday 135 g ... but I thought it didn´t matter as I had been training so hard...but it did

Did you take your basal?

If you are fasting your liver will dump glucose to keep you going in the absence of food, I imagine that's what is pushing your blood sugar up.

If you are not eating a lot at the moment, you might need to check that your basal levels are set up to take into account long fasts, usually basal tests aren't done over 12 hours, because most people will eat within that time, and so will likely avoid a big liver dump. Alternatively you could just do correction doses with fast acting. I'd be really careful and cautious with both those options though because you don't want to drop too low and be forced to eat to fight hypos when, I'm assuming from your list of meds, you aren't feeling up to it.

Here is some info on basal testing - https://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/

It sounds like a basal issue to me too @dynamitedj If you can do a basal test, then that would be good.

Other possible, causes may be stress (physical - ie illness or infection - or emotional) or dodgy insulin. Sometimes insulin can 'go off' and not be as effective.

I eat a lot during the day but if for some reason I wake high, then that basically messes up my day and takes a surprising amount of corrections.

You say you felt "not normal". Possibly your coming down with something? If your BS is around 20 normally, then perhaps your team could make suggestions to get that down while following the eating/not eating regime that suits you.

Basal test? sorry i'm not sure i know what that means never been told that one before.

My background insulin is consistent at 12 units in a morning and 14 on a night, every 10 days or so if i don't notice a change i increase it by another half unit but my morning WAS fine until the last few days when i've not been eating properly it was just my overnight - morning test that was always high, might have to start with a small breakfast or small lunch as i don't usually sleep until 5-6am and wake up at 10-11am so might be worth trying.

I appreciate the help from you all and i'm glad to know i'm not the only one, @Freema i hope you lose the intended weight, i wish i could put some on, i used to be 43ST now i'm under 10 and everyone is concerned as i'm losing weight with every appt every few weeks

Didn't know that, never been told that before

Could be the illness affecting me, my insulin is regularly changed and is never more than a month old even when stored in the fridge and never open longer than 4-5 days but i will order a new repeat just to double check as i suppose it could be the problem

I agree with @azure , if I wake high it messes up my whole day and seems insulin is water.
I inadvertently fasted Tuesday to see how long it took for my insulin to start dropping me so I knew when to bolus at BF. Well it never dropped for over 3 hours and I had my usual DAILY dose of insulin in by then as I kept rising. I didn't stop rising until I gave in and ate lunch. No fasting for me. Haha. That whole day was a huge mess

The other strange thing I notice is if I try to stop any further rise with a correction bolus before 3 hours it does very little to nothing. However if I take 1/2 unit correction after 3 hours it can drop me 30-40. I don't get it....
