The basal bolus regime is where the insulin is broke up into its two functional parts...........the basal dose, which holds your blood sugar steady when you have no food digesting....the glucose it deals with is the slowly released stuff from the liver which goes constantly......ans then the bolus, which is the shorter acting stuff designed specifically for the glucose from digesting foods....
your currently on an insulin that contains both these functions in one dose....
because they are together, you can't adjust one without effecting the other and therefore you are restricted to a fixed amount of carbs a day....
its definitely worth getting some training first before going for a basal/bolus regime, but if the team are there ready to support you, you could start straight away....
