Type 2 & a tummy bug

Hi. I'm type 2 diet controlled and have caught a tummy bug. I was wondering what I should do about food intake as previously I would have starved for 24 hours and now that is just not an option. I've been diagnosed about a year but honestly I've only been taking it seriously for around 4 months and I don't want to mess things up now. Thank you in advance for any help. Hellen.

Go for easy foods - fish, eggs and soup. Though I have to say that it doesn't seem to hurt me to go without food for hours, but we're all different.. Drink plenty of water and keep warm. Hope you're soon over it!

Hi Hellen, and welcome to the forums.

I haven't had to tackle a stomach bug yet, but are you actually being sick all the time, or are you still able to keep things down?

If you can, just so your sugar keeps up, try a couple of plain crackers. Drink water if you can. Don't worry about your diet while you're ill, as you need to try and keep sugar levels reasonable. Test, to keep an eye on them.

To be honest, I doubt very much if going without food for a while would do any harm at all. As a type 2, although our blood sugars can go low, they are not as dangerous as they can be for a type 1.

I had a tummy bug last year and didn't eat for three days, I didn't give the diabetes a second thought. Dioralyte is an option if you become dehydrated but I would just stick to clear liquids for a least 24 hrs.

I drank plenty of very diluted squash and some bouillon powder (Marigold, can get it in supermarkets) which makes for a very soothing savoury drink.

Hope you feel better soon. :)

Just wanted to say thank you for the advice and best wishes. Tummy bug now gone and I managed to control my levels too. Bizarrely a fairly positive episode. Thank you.

Glad your feeling better Helen :D

For future reference if for any reason you just cant eat I would recommend Dioralyte oral rehydration sachets they contain a balanced amount of glucose and salts and will keep you hydrated, most important when you are not well
