Hi, I've had late onset gestational diabetes with my 2nd child then was diagnosed at 20 weeks with gestational diabetes with my 3rd child. I had a blood test after my 3rd child was born which came back ok thankfully. However from reading on various websites the chances of developing type 2 were very high having had gestational diabetes and was just wondering if this is correct?

Hi @Emmalb22 :)

Yes, having GD does put younat increased risk of developing Type 2 in the future. I read that 50% of women who had GDvwill go on to develop Type 2 in the next 10-15 years.

Are you having regular monitoring eg annual tests?

Wow that's a frightening statistic. No I've only had the one blood test after my baby was born and he is going to be 3 in a few months time. To be honest I'm really scared to find out but I know I shouldn't bury my head in the sand, I will contact my doctor and request a blood test. Thank you for your help.

I had gestational diabetes with my first child 1991 and it went. It came back for good in 1997. I was told I would probably get it later in life but didn't expect only 6 years later!
