Type 2 and due spinal surgery

Good afternoon, my first time posting. I’m t2 diabetic been placed on humalog and lantus my latest hab1c is 118 last week. Average fasting blood test is 11-17. Super frustrated. Bought the DIABETIC CODE and since 1 May 2018 started 16 hour fast, ignore as much as possible carbs and joined the gym. Surgery was cancelled as max acceptance is 69... due to high risk of surgical site infection amongst other things...any advice would be grateful from those already following JasonFung book/videos. Diabetic nurse and consultant really appear clueless (I’m sorry to sound like this) but really wana just increase increase and increase insulin. I so far stopped insulin since 1 May. So far no call backs from diabetic nurse and diabetic consultant discharged me.
 
Welcome to the forum. I too struggled for a long time to get anything like normal results even with low carbing and as I am too thin I needed to maintain my weight. I have recently been just having breakfast (always lots of spinach, 1 large or a few small tomatoes, some onion, celery, peppers, chillies etc fried in coconut oil and when ready add two eggs, stir and cook till the eggs are done. I then have lunch around 2.00pm which will be more veg or a salad with fish, chicken or some cheese or a chicken curry with just veg. No starchy veg and no fruit (and of course none of the things us that struggle with our BG mustn't have) Nothing after that except black coffee (I am a coffeeholic) or water. Pretty boring but edible and for the first time ever I have glucoses down in the 5s and even the occasional one in the high 4s
I am having a hip replacement in August so hopefully my HbA1c and BS will be better than it has been in the past. I am just on metformin for my diabetes and don't want to have to take anything else.
I recently actually saw a Dr for the first time ever as the diabetic nurse has left and the new one isn't as qualified as she was. I was a biochemist until I retired so fairly clued up but I did struggle with my diet and have found the only way for me is being incredibly strict with what I eat.
 
A 18hr fast will help, but 36hr fasting 3 times a week will help a lot more, likewise any reduction in carbs is good, but the best results come from getting to under 30g of carbs a day. Lots of people have turnaround from the levels of BG you have within a few months, therefore you can as well.

You have already got yourself what I consider to be the best book on type2, I wish it was on the market when I needed it! DietDoctor is the best website to learn about low carb.
 
Hi Brandon, can I ask if you’re on any oral medication, only going from Insulin to nothing seems a big change to me, bearing in mind I don’t have any experience of insulin, as I’m on just Metformin. I was diagnosed Type 2 last May with an HbA1c of 70 shortly before being listed for major surgery on my foot, by my pre op in Sept. I had got my HbA1c down to non diabetic numbers which my orthopaedic consultant was very happy about. I did it by restricting carbs to under 100g/day initially and then after six weeks down to 50-70g (these days I keep to 40-60g/day) After the surgery I healed as if I wasn’t diabetic. I can’t advise on fasting as it doesn’t agree with my liver, which likes to helpfully dump sugar if it thinks I’m starving!

I’m a Fungster and intermittent fast all the time (no breakfast) and do the odd extended fast too, we just finished a group fast last week. I found it really helped to lower my blood sugar levels when combined with an ultra low carb ketogenic diet. I guess you may have looked at www.dietdoctor.com for some great food ideas and recipes. Never been on insulin and stopped meds after 3 weeks so can’t help so much there sorry.
