Type 2 and ignored it for far too long

Hi,

Basically as the thread title says!

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2011 when I was at university. It wasn't something I wanted to deal with, especially since all my friends were out drinking and eating whatever they wanted. A late night Indian or McDonalds was a really regular thing.

I was prescribed 2000mg of metformin, I have been taking that fairly regularly, though if I'm honest only because I've discovered that it appears to control my acne. I think part of the problem is that I have no other symptoms, which has made this whole thing even easier to ignore.

I've suddenly started to freak myself out with everything that can possibly go wrong now so I know I need to wake up and get this thing under control. I've been back to the doctors, and my HbAC1 level was 54. He basically told me that I needed to loose weight, start eating properly and then come back in three months.

I've spent the afternoon reading a lot of stuff on the internet, and it basically appears that to control my blood sugar I have to give up everything I like. I'm trying to meal plan low carb meals and I'm coming up with nothing. I have quite a big appetite and am used to eating fairly big meals, usually with chips, boiled or mashed potatoes. I also eat out a lot, it's a big part of my social life, as is the occasional mad night out. I suppose basically I'm asking do I have to give all that up? I know I've been incredibly stupid and I'm scared of how much damage I may have already done to myself, but I really don't know where to go from here?

I'm really sorry about the length of this.......think I've overdone the research today!

Hi, I think you've taken a step in the right direction knowing that you need to take this seriously.

Try not to bombard yourself with research and info, just take one step at a time, @daisy will give you some info and if you have any questions just ask, nothing is silly.

The low carb section on the forum is brilliant and you will get loads of ideas, it's not all doom & gloom :)

Hi Georgina.

Welcome to the forum and well done for taking the decision to tackle your diabetes.

You don't have give up everything. If you want an Indian meal, ditch the poppadoms and mango chutney, reduce your rice portion, eat more veg, give up the naan, eat the meat but not too much of any sweet sauces. So what I'm saying is, there are ways of reducing your carbs and still enjoying your foods.

Good luck.

Hi and welcome
You've come to the right place, there are a lot of things to eat. Out there and it's not all salads some yes but not all
How does a full English breakfast sound for a start ,no hash brown baked beans or toast but bacon eggs good sausage tomatoes mushrooms does that seem OK to you ?
So don't worry ,cut down on the carbs and your BG numbers will come down as well
Keep well stay safe JJ

The bad thing with diabetes is that you actually have to live the healthy life we all should live. It's the pits, isn't it, to have to take care of yourself and you health instead of having lots of chocolate every night and drink sweet fizzy things. Sorry for being flippant, I know the pain you are in.

The good thing is that fat doesn't raise your BG Cheese is usually fine, as are a lot of things. we weren't made graze or to live on cereal anyway so if you choose meat, fish, most vegs, possibly smallish helpings of potatoes, salad with dressing etc etc there will be a lot of restaurant food to choose from while keeping your BG normal enough to prevent long term damage like the excruciating of neuropathy, blindness, renal failure, amputation and death. I have inherited lots diabetes genes and have seen how devastating bad control can be.

The first thing any diabetic needs is a blood glucose meter. Have you got one of those? Testing is vital. It will tell you what your can tolerate and what should be avoided. We are all different so impossible to say what you can eat or rather should avoid. For me bread and pasta are the worst. I can tolerate small amounts of potatoes but try to stay away from rice. Parsnips are out but small amounts of carrots are fine. When first diagnosed I did nothing but test and managed to get my HbA1c down to 33.

Hi and welcome. I don't think it's ever really too late to live a healthier life. You will need to adapt but once you start to see the results you will also start to feel better about yourself. Good luck

Hi and welcome to the forum. Dont be too hard on yourself. It can be a hard journey to start with but you will get there. I used to be a carb junkie but now I am down to less than 30g carbs a day. Have a look on the LCHF forums as there is a lot if great advice out there. Also have a look on Pinterest, it is where I have found most of my recipes. It can take a bit if time but if you make changes gradually it is easier to stick with them. You will find there is a lower carb alternative fir almost everything.
