Type 2 and Statins

I had trouble with statins. About four different ones were tried and I had everything from leg muscles tightening up so I couldn't walk, gastro enteritis and rigid shoulders and neck. I ended up in physio with the last one. My file now says "intolerant of statins".

I asked for other peoples experiences on this forum since I didn't believe I was the only one or even 1 in 10,000 etc. and I got some interesting comments.

Some people have no trouble with them at all. Some people refuse to take them. Some people take them and have side effects as I did. The two strangest groups of all were the people that collected them from the dispensary and threw them in the dustbin and those that did similar and kept it a secret even from their spouse. These last two appear as if to be taking them without complications. What price 1 in 10,000 now.

All you can do is take them, read the paper that comes in the box so that you are alerted early to any side effects and contact your nurse at the first signs of trouble. My nurse was quite happy to try them all until none suited me.

Hi - been on Simvastin 40 mg for 5 years along with metformin and glixozade - since April suffered really sore muscle pain and agony in my feet in bed decided to stop it off my own back 10 days ago not much improvemnet and have severe indegestion and palpatations over lst week has anyne suffered this after stopping - selfishly i suppose i expected to feel better straight away cheers

I reacted badly to statins, The pains came on gradually and I thought they were just my normal muscle soreness from exercise. I lost a lot of strength which has not returned on stopping.

However, on the advice of an locum doctor I stopped the statins (cholesterol immediately shot up) and switched to daily benecol drink and a finely chopped clove of garlic. My cholesterol came down significantly. I then started low-carbing and my cholesterol came down again (even though I was eating lots of cheese, nuts, saturated fat) and more importantly my ratios (hdl/ldl, triglycerides) improved too.

I was put on statins about 15 years ago and got the muscle weakness side effect after a few weeks. I stopped taking them and never took any again, despite many doctors telling me I should. After I found out I had type 2, I eventually went on a low carb high fat diet and after a couple of months my cholesterol numbers are the best they've been since they started being measured (20 years).
