Hi @Hammer1964 - Metformin does not cause Hypo's.
Your food menu sounds really mouth-watering :).
I was a Vegetarian for many years until a year ago, my GP suggested that I try to eat 'Meat'! (I suffer with Aneamia) I now eat Eggs, Smoked Bacon, Pork Meatballs, Mince, Sausages, Chicken Kievs and Tinned Tuna - but still eat loads of Vegetables and Salads.
There is a Vegetarian Thread for members who post daily, but you have probably found it?:)

Hi Liam1955 yes I have found the thread and it is useful apart from the avocado bits, this makes me heave. lol. I applaud you for going back on meat and fish, I could not do that, I have been a veggie for 40 years and really detest the textures of meat and fish. I don't mind cooking it for my family but will not have it for myself. Thanks for the compliment, fortunately I have a lot more recipes to eat or it would be boring.

Hi @debbiek I was diagnosed nearly 6 weeks ago - Type 2. My DN gave me a meter and strips and lancets on prescription, also on 80mg of Gliclazide a day. I was told my diabetes is genetic, don't really have any weight to loose (size 10). HbAc1 was 78. Also a vegetarian - no meat, fish, seafood or meat substitute = a picky eater. Yes I loved the carbs like bread, rolls, pasta, rice and potatoes. I can't tolerate the bread, rice or pasta and chips are a killer for me and I don't mean a portion either but around 10 oven chips and my bg rockets!
I haven't found the last six weeks easy and my doctor is not supportive, he tells me to put my meter away in a very safe place and forget about it. He said I need to take my pills and start living. I have ignored that advice, I no longer test at breakfast as I eat the same every day and know what is ok, I still test before and two hours after dinner. I am now finding things easier and the info is sinking in. Going for a blood test in two weeks - doctors orders which will include the month before I was diagnosed, also had two infections then - sinusitis and costochondritis (inflammation of rib cartilage) so do not expect much from my results. My point is that it gets easier and by testing you will feel more in control plus this site is amazing.

Thanks i did low carb when first diagnosed lets say i failed within two weeks , i craved all bad things lol im doomed , i gave in and i suppose i went into some form of denial thinking if im going go im going out my way happy not miserable , im not a vegetarian nor do i eat alot of meat , cheese doesnt agree with me , again like you ive had about 3 infections current one is in my big toe due to ingrowing toenail , DN i have lets say waste of time right now , im thinking of changing doctors , ive been told because of infection that can cause your BG to be higher , sorry if i have terms wrong still learning all this jargon etc , as for Metformin lets say dont think its agreeing with me right now but its early days have to give it a try , i agree this site is amazing , 3months ago it was too much for me so i took time out again denial that im diabetic , no longer in denial ,and going to be good from now on . DN told me today continue with weight loss , i have lost another 2 kg so total so far is 7kg weigh loss and that without trying

Hi Debbiek, well done on the weight loss, I was in denial at first and did not want to know, also the first 2/3 weeks were really hard giving up the things I liked eating, a bit like going cold turkey I think! I remember having a bad day at school/class really challenging and had a coffee + two chocolate biscuits + ginger cake lol! Have not done that since and now I don't miss those things at all. Things will get better, I have had my retinol screening and that was fine, have been told I have cataracts though but not because of the diabetes.

Also I have read that having an infection will cause your bg to rise. On a lighter note one thing I am not giving up is gin & tonic, that is too much to ask!

Hi @debbiek - Are you on the Standard Metformin? This can and does make a lot of Diabetics suffer terrible Stomach conditions and diarrhoea. Don't suffer with it as there is another version called: Slow Release Metformin that is better.
But, you will have to go and see your GP and ask to be put on the Slow Release Metformin. And you do know that if you are on Diabetic Medication that your prescriptions are free.

Yes you should receive a letter or at your next appointment with the DN ask about arranging it. My next appointment is in 2 weeks and I will be asking about viewing my results on line, not too sure that doctors/nurses like you doing that! My body, my disease, my results!

Having and using a meter tells you what your body is doing, but also is a form of incentive. There are good days and bad days, but if you stick to whatever you choose, you do see the results. I'm almost six months in and am regularly seeing BG values that make me want to talk to the GP about dropping some of my medication. I'm often seeing BG in the 5s and sometimes in the 4s. As an Engineer, I really cannot accept the thought that you can control something you aren't measuring!

It should happen but may not. After five months I found my GP surgery said I was registered but I wasn't actually. The NHS does not do communication properly.

These symptoms usually go away after a few weeks with some people. Always remember to take Metformin with food and not on an empty stomach. Though Metformin can help with weight loss as it lowers appetite.
That's good to know you have filled out the form for your free prescriptions. :)

Hi i was diagnosed in January 2017 with type 2 Diabetes , for first 3 months diet alone , and go on a education course for Diabetes , after results today of 6.9 they have now put me on Metformin 500 mg 1 tablet a day for a week , then 2 tablets a day , i have had constant infections one after another , again Diabetic Nurse says i dont need to test my Blood Sugar , how am i going to know how to control it without testing it ? has anyone else had same treatment as me been told not to test blood ? forgot to add due to anticoagulants i have to be careful what food i eat , i am also helping a research project called StartRight who are wanting 400 people that have been diagnosed in the last year and under 50 , i bought a monitor kit few months back when i was first diagnosed .

There is a lot of misinformation at the doctor's. With my first ever reading of 7.2mmol, a1c of 6.5% my doctor went on to suggest I go on insulin as he said they were seeing good outcomes for newly diagnosed with a 6 month insulin treatment! I stumbled upon LCHF (Low Carb, High Fat), Intermittent fasting and haven't looked back, my sugars are normal, I have lost weight so it can all be reversed. I am new to this community, however everyone seems supportive and helpful, you will find guidance to help you in discovering more about type 2 and hopefully reversing it, because that is a real possibility!

thank you im going to start testing myself , though i have just become a test subject for StartRight they are wanting 400 people who have been diagnosed with diabetes in last year and under 50 , its to help get better diagnosis for diabetes

You may find that to be a test subject that you may be recommended to follow a particular way of eating, which may well follow 'received' diabetic wisdom.

If you are testing your BG before and after meals and find carbs affect your BG the wrong way you may find a choice may have to be made.

I'm having my hbaic done on Thursday after 3 months on LCHF and hoping to have dropped from 68 to 48 :)
