Type 2 diabetes question

Hello all,

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 6 weeks ago. I'm not on any medication and it is controlled with diet and exercise. I'm still in shock with the diagnosis as I didn't have any warning signs. Although I'm thankful I'm not on any medication I feel I've been left a bit in limbo with nobody to really discuss my feelings with. This site seems to be aimed at people who's diabetes is controlled with medication and I wondered if anybody else was in the same boat.

Hi and welcome:)
there are many in the same boat as you who will be able to share stories

Hi, I'm another one with Type 2, diet & exercise only, no meds. If you browse through these forums you will get a lot of information on suitable diets, but first and foremost you need to cut out sugar, cakes, biscuits, puddings, sugary drinks etc. and also reduce your carbohydrate intake, avoiding the "whites" such as bread, potatoes, pasta, rice and things made with flour as much as possible. Avoid all junk food, and always read the nutrition labels on food packaging. It will help to keep a diary of everything you eat.

I don't take any medication.

Although we meds-free folks appear to be in the minority, there are plenty of us around. I'm only a few months into my diabetes life, but there are a number of longer-term meds free folks around. I take heart in that.

o/ no meds here either. :-)

What I found really important is the exercise. I really notice the difference in my blood glucose levels the next day if I hadn't exercise the previous day.

You do not say whether you test your levels at the moment. I would say this for me was the turning point! How do you know if it is going well if you do not get any feedback. You can then see those foods that "spike" you the worst and amend the quantity that you eat.

There is lots of information on the site and many people willing to help. Please ask your questions as we are more than happy to help.

Hi and welcome to the forum Skye.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I'm also just diet controlled - as are many others at the forum.

If you haven't already seen it, you'll get some good information from reading the information for the newly diagnosed:

Hi thanks for your response. I've had a look at the link and it's answered some of the questions I had.

Hi thanks for your reply. I think the idea of a diary is a good one so I can keep track of what I'm eating and drinking properly. Thank you.

Hi, I've been going to the gym twice a week for the last few weeks and am walking a lot more. No I'm not currently testing my levels at the moment. I had an initial appointment with the diabetic nurse 6 weeks ago and am seeing her next week so will ask her about this further. Thank you.

Hi Skye
I am also diet controlled and hopefully will keep it that way for as long as possible. I was diagnosed just over 2 weeks ago (a shock) and have been following low carb ever since. I have a bs monitor so know mine has dropped considerably and I have also lost 7lbs. Good luck and I hope you find the right diet and exercise for you :)

Hi Skye
I am 6 months into type 2. No symptoms at diagnosis either. Convinced my GP to let me try diet and exercise. I think they were very pleasantly surprised when I went back 2 months later half a stone lighter and with a much improved HbA1c.
I am now 6 months on, almost 2 stone lighter, and mostly behaving on my low carb diet. Morning fasting levels are usually OK ( below 5.5). Next blood test in 2 weeks, so will be interesting to see what that shows. Hopefully still no medication required.
And I feel so much better for my new healthy lifestyle!
Good luck with your journey too!
Sue
