Type 2: Low BMI people

A typical number thrown about is that 20% of diagnosed type 2-s have a normal bmi, which is a bmi between 18.5 and 24.9. But that healthy bmi is probably not healthy for most people. For instance with my height, 188cm, my "normal" weight could be anything between 65 kg, or 88 kg! Thats a difference of 23 kg! and if those are 23 kgs of fat or muscle bmi says nothing about.

So bodyfat is a better indicator, and since I am a male I have memorized healthy bodyfat and stuff for men, women I need to look up, but if every man in the world had a bodyfat of 5.5% which is healthy btw, and loads of muscle, we would not have diabetes type 2 in the world. Having a bmi of 22.5 is not that much use if you have a bodyfat of 20% for instance, so there you have it, bodyfat matters more than bmi.

My body shape change this last 3 months has been amazing.

I now have a Withings Body Cardio set of scales and have seen my physical numbers change quite noticeably:

Height: 182 cm

BMI: 21.8

Fat mass: 17.1%

Bone mass: 4.1%

Water mass: 55.8%

And all on the downward trajectory:) I just love the empowerment of technology!!

Yes I've been thirsty a lot recently.

@zed007 okay, thirsty is a symptom best not ignored. Getting tested was a good thing to do today.

I was in my early 20's, weighed 105 pounds, when I first started having symptoms. I'm 54 now, and because no one told me there was a diet I could use to manage my condition, it progressed and worsened. I have severe insulin resistance now. Sixteen months ago, I was taught a diet. I started it, stayed on it, and like so many before me, my health was restored, more than 30 years later, and I don't have any complications. I facilitate a diabetes group now.

I know waiting is difficult. Ten days is a long time. If it were me and I had the money, I'd consider buying the cheapest blood glucose meter I could, and I'd start testing my blood glucose levels, but then again, that won't change anything, will it?

Hang in there.

You may or may not have diabetes, but if you do, we'll support you in learning how to manage it, and if you take it seriously, and do what you need to do, you'll be okay.

And zed007, if you have diabetes, it's not your fault. So if you're beating yourself up over this, stop.

You don't know this yet, but if you do have diabetes, this is the best place you could have found in the world to get the support and guidance you'll need initially.

When you get your results, let us know. For now, if you have questions, ask. If you want to focus on other things in your life for the next ten days, that's okay too. We'll still be here.

It's late. Heading to bed now...

Hello. I saw gp and she booked me in for blood test in 1.5 weeks along with liver, kidney and calcium blood.:nailbiting:

I really hope I'm fine, I already have asthma, allergies, Gilbert's so don't want another condition which is definitely more Serious :banghead:

I did my weight the other day and despite feeling skinnier than normal, I haven't lost weight. So I'm still slightly underweight by a few pounds :)

OK so the scales don't lie, but neither does the physical shape...perhaps you're transforming fat for lean mass? :)

Whoa, those are some amazing stats! Thats the results of lot of hard work and determination, congratulations to you.

Just some questions.

Are you going to continue to lose weight? Have you gotten a lot of comments on your new body? How is your appetite? Good luck in the future and may your health still be blessed!

I'm not overweight so I'm not trying to lose weight.

@zed007 that's really good news that you're not losing any weight, also that your doctor is taking your concerns seriously. I have multiple chronic health conditions too. Interestingly, a mix of two diets works for all of them. After you learn more about what's happening with your body, you can begin researching what the best diet might be for you to try.

Thanks for letting us know how you're doing. Keep us posted as you get more information. :)

I had a blood test this week for hba2c or whatever it's called, kidney and liver I think, so results next week.

I'm maybe a little less thirsty than I was a few weeks ago, but I know that's no real indicator
