Good morning all

I have been wandering this for a while. I was diagnosed type 2 around 7 years ago. 3 years ago i was given steroids for a suspected chest infection that was effecting my asthma medication for diabetes then was insulin and metformin. I was hospitalised due to very high blood reading and was put on a sliding scale for 3 days and numerous blood tests. Since then I couldn't take metformin anymore as it made me sick so was put on novo rapid

Insuman 17 units morning and night
Novo rapid 4 units morning and night

I have been on the novo rapid nearly 2 years. my daily figures are in double figures no matter what i do my activity level is better than it has been and food is healthy, I'm tired all the time.

Yesterday i was in double figures all day highest being nearly 16 my recent HBA1C was 117 up from 106 I know i need to get this figure down but im at a loss and im starting to wander if my pancreas has given up and im actually type 1. Im having weekly catch ups with my diabetic nurse who is taking advice from the hospital too.. im waiting to go on the DAFNE course which im hoping to go on next month

please can someone help

Thanks

Have you ever had a c-peptide test to see what your insulin production is like? If you have ask for another and see if it has got better or worse?

Hi and welcome. Can you let us know what area your weight lies in and your BMI? As a guess could be T1 if you are slim but if not you may have high insulin resistance and be T2? What sort of diet do you have? You appear to be having fixed Bolus doses. Normally by now you would be carb-counting your Bolus dose for the carbs in each meal. If your nurse has never discussed this do ask for guidance as it's very important otherwise you can spike up and down possibly into a hypo.

Hi and thanks

my weight is 11st1 im 5ft3 my bmi is 27.1

im still eating carbs but have cut right down since christmas like i said im waiting to go on the DAFNE course and its only a process of waiting for this then ill be injecting to what carbs i eat

my daily sugars are all over the place

Maybe see if you can get it re-checked then you'll be able to see if it has changed?

I have emailed my nurse about how im feeling and if i have had or could i have a c peptide test again. im feeling down today and the slightest thing i making me cry. im so confused by it all and just want to why after everything that they have tried medication wise why im still going up on the HBA1C front. yesterday i was in double figures all day i have a constant headache

It may well be that you need more insulin. T2s tend to be insulin resistant so they can need a lot, particularly if their own insulin production has declined (apparently high sugar levels can damage your insulin producing cells). I am puzzled as to why, if your levels are so high, your nurse hasn't increased your insulin. Having said that, this is one reason why low carb can be helpful for T2s, as increasing insulin tends to increase weight which then increases the insulin resistance....

Was the cpeptide a fasting reading?

im not sure if it was a fasting test. todays figures early morning 1am 17units insuman 12.1 then i had breakfast of muesli tested again at 5am 4 units novo rapid 12.6 tested again 11am 3.9.tested an hour later i was in double figures again after treating the hypo with glucose tablets i work nights thats why the timings look funny im an online shopper so on the go for 5 hours

So...are you saying you took your normal 17 units insuman at 1am (glucose reading was at 12.1) and had your muesli at the same time?

Then at 5am, you were at 12.6 and took your 4 units of novarapid? (No food?)

Then at 11am you tested and was at 3.9?

Then you treated this 'hypo' and at 12 you were in double figures (bearing in mind 3.9 is a VERY borderline 'hypo' which you may have over compensated for)?

I know you mentioned an upcoming carb counting course etc, but your regime sounds odd as it seems you are taking a fixed '4 units of novarapid' as if it were a medicine that you must have, on the dot, no matter what?

If I have got this right, no wonder you went hypo after taking 4 units (seemingly randomly) with no food at 5am?

Apologies if I am totally off track as it sounds confusing, can you clarify? It sounds to me like they have left you using a potentially life or death drug (insulin) with no support or instruction whatsoever on what it does or how to use it. x

how would i use it i have been told to take 17 units insuman in morning and night and 4 units of novo rapid morning and night when im working i take the insuman when i get up and novorapid when im on my break

i have spoken to my nurse and she is going to recheck my c peptide again in a few weeks but she has reassured me that it looks like i am type 2 as i would be a lot sicker if i was type 1

Hi there, we are not allowed to tell you how to use medication or how much etc, you really need to speak with your medical team. I take my novarapid only when I eat and the amount depends on how many carbs I'm eating BUT as I say I am aware you're not on the same carb counting regime. x

i am in weekly contact with my diabetic nurse who has put my insuman up by one unit last week and i was told not to touch my novo rapid as yet as doing baby steps. when i go on the DAPHNE course i will learn to inject to the amount of carbs im eating. i dont expect anyone to tell me how to inject or the amount of my medication

im only asking for advice as im confused as to why my HBA1C has gone up when im doing everything im being told to do
