Hi all this is my first post i have type 2 for the last 7 years am insulin resistant and have had PCOS for the last 25 years and am aged 5, i do wish someone had warned me of the risk of developiing Diabetes earlier and i am a health professional and had not made the connection.
My diabetes cam about after i had a urine intection whilst on holiday in france and the kind doctoe also put me on steroids....
Now i understand the connection but did not then and subsequently 1 month later went to my GP still not feeling well in fact worse and all the usual symptoms weight loss etc....bgs of 21 and put straight on bgs monitoring and meds...
I am on metformin and the usual cardiac protection and blood pressure tabs even theough it is never above 128/85, i follow on the whole a low carb GI diet and also try to keep my alcohol intake low.
I had a period of unstable Bgs last year followiing a viral illnesss and ended up on insulin for a very short time (less than a week)after seeing the consultant for the first time who was sure i had come to the point that i would require insulin but i was sure it was my body inability to counter the erffects of the illness and manage my bgs, so glad i was right and they were wrong i am desperate to avoid insulin at all cost as i am overweight but have managed to keep my weight stable, except when ill and then usually lose weight which i try really hard not to put on again and my HBA1C is usally aboout 5 and my cholesterol is also low about 3 or less so feel i am doing reasonably well in managing things...
My difficultly is exercise i hate it i do walk regularly and try really hard to eat well and usually manage it with the occassional time off for good behaviour for holidays and special occassions...
I would be interested if there are other women out there who i could email to see how they cope with the menopause and if it has affected their bgs control
Regards

Hi Sue
I can kind of relate to what you are going through. I am 30yrs old and have a condition called "hypogonadism" ( basically my pituitary gland doesnt send the message to my ovaries to ovulate, hence no oestrogen is produced, causing similar side effects of menopause). My diabetes was discovered late last year when I was pregnant with my 1st child (after 3 rounds of IVF :D ). I used insulin during my pregnancy. Its a bitter sweet pill to swallow regarding the diabetes, as I know mine is due to hormone imbalances. Im trying to research it to see if there are any other ways I can help lower my bs, as I know oestrogen helps lower your bs. Im on hrt,(for oestrogen) but havent noticed that they have any effect on my bs.
I was put on metformin after my sons birth, but felt awful. I decided to take control of the situation and have been following a low carb diet for 2 weeks now. Ive stopped taking metformin, and have found that my bs have been excellent. Ive had one reading of 9 when I ate some peas and corn (didnt realise they were high carbs). I am finding it ok, but a little restrictive. The hard part is finding food for on the go with a busy life style, but I just think its how my life has to be if I want to be around and healthy for my son. I still have a few little treats now and again. Who knows if I will give in and go on meds again, but for now I heading down this road.
You seem to be leading a healthy lifestyle, which will help with the menopause and your diabetes. Your hba1c is excellent!
Im not sure if my story helps, but I guess its comforting to know there are others in a similar situation.
Hope the hot sweats are bearable?!!
