Having severe pain in hips and leg both legs and on metformin is this a side effect
I had that when on Atorvastatin and Metformin - was using two sticks in just a few weeks - I can't say if it was one or the other as I started and stopped both tablets on the same day.
It was 18 months before the final ache subsided, and probably 3 years before I was strong enough to carry a knitting machine again.

No personal experience of metformin.

Here's a link to the NHS "side effects of metformin" page:

Personally, I would not follow some of the rather outdated advice on this page (the things like having carbs if you're going to exercise etc) but it does list the well-known common metformin side effects. I don't see severe hip and leg pain amongst them.

Hi and welcome to the forum @ant12ant . Is the hip and leg pain related to muscle, nerve or joint pain? Joint pain, for me , can be like a dull continuous ache that keeps me awake at night. Different positions can alleviate or aggravate that pain. Or is it muscle or nerve pain ? I have arthritis in all my joints, so I get the ache, plus I get intense burning pain down the outside of my thigh if I exercise too much, which is nerve pain. I have herniated discs in my lumber and thoracic spine caused by the arthritis . The pain from that can run down my legs through my hips and creates pain and muscle weakness in my leg muscles. It affects my muscles and at times, my nerves. My arthritis is genetic and not overuse. Is there swelling or redness? Obviously we cannot diagnose on the forum, but it's helpful to log your symptoms and type of pain you experience and when you get it. It would help your Dr find the cause.

If you suspect it is the metformin that is causing the pain, as stated earlier, your Dr will likely want to know the type of pain it is. Drugs like statins are a known to cause muscle pain and it is listed in the side effects. Are you on statins? Metformin is not known to cause muscle pain, that doesn't mean to say it will not. It could also be a coincidence and the pain is caused by something else. If it was me I would contact my Dr.

Edited to add muscle
