Hello folks, never posted on a forum before, so please excuse me if I don’t get this right, lol.

I have type 2 and I take metformin daily. I have noticed recently I’ve had a few days where I’ve struggled to stay awake during the day.
I have just taken my blood glucose test and it’s saying it’s 15 on my machine. I understand this is high. What I would like to know is how to reverse this? normally I just ride it out but there’s gotta be an easier way. Any help will be appreciated

I used nod of pre-diagnosis every afternoon & evening post lunch & dinner.
High glucose will do that.

Went low carb post diagnosis, normailsed BG but kicked off insomnia.
Yes, 15 is too high & you need to work on getting that down.
Start lowering carbs & start some moderate exercise if you are able, you'll soon see results.

Hello and welome,

how do you currently manage your diabetes? are you on any medication? What sort of diet do you currently eat? These details are needed before we can make any suggestions.

I am going to suggest that you read some of the links in my signature block they are a quick way to learn a lot.

Let us know a bit more information and I am sure you will find many here willing to help.

Welcome

Hi

High BG's can make you feel rough in many ways.. there was a time i was averaging about 15mmol.. and would frequently see highs in the 20's and above.. and yes for me tiredness was an issue.

as @VashtiB says provide some details about your treatment, an idea of what you eat, and how you attempt to control the BG and hopefully you will get plenty of suggestions on how you can control this. and hopefully once you get your BG under control you'll feel a little better

Hi and welcome @CF237

Great to see you have a meter and are testing as this is the first step in gaining control of your diabetes.

I suggest that you test on wakening every day before eating or drinking as this gives you (Fasting Blood Glucose Level) the platform to see how your levels are progressing. It helped me to post it in on the thread to build the habit and get some feedback. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/th...-blood-glucose-with-some-chat.22272/page-2889

You can then use your meter by testing before first bite of a meal and then 2 hours later. If the level increases by more than 2 then this is a meal to avoid. It will typically be carbs such as Bread, Pasta, Rice,Cakes, Biscuits etc that will cause the increases. If you eat to your meter you should see a progressive drop in your levels while using this site to see what has worked for others and make longer term decisions on diet options

Yes tiredness is often associated with high sugar levels

Let us know how you go

Hi @clomy Madit & welcome to the forum :)

15 is quite high, I know when I was undiagnosed and was running high without my knowing I could (and did) fall asleep standing up, it’s a common side effect of constant high B.G. I also get a tired feeling if I over indulge in carbs. Never really do it though as it makes me feel so yuck, Christmas is probably the only time.

I see by your profile your not on any hypo inducing medication like insulin or Gliclizide, Metformin won’t do much to lower your B.G. It doesn’t work like that, it works on your liver to stop it dumping more sugar into your blood stream.

What’s your diet like? Do you eat a lot of carbs? A lot of us T2 on the forum manage our BG with a low carb or even keto diet. It’s not just sugars you need to look at, all carbs turn to sugar. It may be you can bring your BG down significantly if you’ve room to adjust your carbs.

Let us know a typical days food for you and maybe members can share some tips for reducing your carbs.

I do a keto diet of 20g carb or less a day, you may not need to drop down that far, we are all different. So the things I don’t eat at all, potatoes, rice, pasta, ordinary bread (I buy low carb bread from the internet) any flour products like pastry, thickened sauces that use flour etc.

Now the good news :) what I do eat, all meat with fat on, bacon, high meat sausages, eggs oily fish, good fats like avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, some butter, some cream, cheese, mayonnaise, Greek yogourt, avocados, above ground veggies of all description, I make Cauli rice or Cauli mash, celeriac although a below ground veg is one of the exceptions and low in carbs & very versatile, mashed roasted, a good replacement for chips.

I do keto but I don’t eat loads of fat, but neither do I avoid it or eat anything that’s labelled low fat, those things usually have sugar added to replace the fat to make it palatable. I do limit my dairy a bit because I find it gives me weight gain.

If you scroll down my signature there’s a couple of links there that you may find useful

Once again welcome to the forum

100% This, I missed appointments, a works Christmas party and generally fell to sleep at the drop of a hat. Thought it was just because I was burning the candle at both ends (working 60+ hours, out late, up early etc) and like lovinglife if I overdo what my body can cope with "Carb Coma" is real and I just can't keep my eyes open

Agree with the above. 15 for a standard reading is indicative of a BG issue.

I used to go to sleep at any opportunity, always a risk when driving. In addition I had apnoea, so the sleep wasn't doing me any good. Both problems (along with many others) vanished with BGs back in normal range.
